So my brothers girlfriend is having her baby later today and I am going to buy a SAK and get it engraved with his sons name and possibly something else like his birthday and weight or time of birth. I am planning on holding onto the knife until he is old enough to appreciate it and use it as a EDC if he wants. I am also thinking of getting my brother a knife engraved as well congratulating him on his new son. What I want to hear from all of you is what knife you think i should get to get engraved and what to put on it. I was thinking a pair of black alox pioneers. I got mine engraved and it turned out beautiful so I figure its a top contender for what knife I will get for him. Thanks everyone.

Here is my engraved pioneer for reference.

I like the black Pioneer idea. :tu:

Or if you wish to upgrade that to a black Farmer I can send you a link to an Italian store that ships internationally. They are about 30 Euro +shipping.

As Mike says, everyone should have a Farmer. ;)

Hard to come up with something as timeless as a black pioneer.
A black Danish Bantam maybe?

Yes they should :D

I bought an engraved bladed Farmer for my boy, and while its a good looking sak now, I reckoned it'd make the blade difficult to clean at best! So I bought a second one and had the scales engraved which I'm much happier to give him :!

Thanks everyone.  :tu:

Not looking to do a classic as it is to small and I need to engrave the blade. The SI would be nice, but i'm really wanting a colored alox and price IS a issue.

The Black Farmer would be great but cost is key here.

Bantam is to thin. Looking for a nice hearty knife.

Not looking to do a scale engraving as I need a lot of room to do the whole engraving. Thinking first and last name on one side which will be crammed and birthdate on the opposite side of the blade.

For Junior I'd say a Compact, if it must be Alox I guess Cadet. (I wont carry a SAK without scissors personally) For Pops a...Compact, Handyman, or Swisschamp. If you want Alox I guess a Farmer or Pioneer. (but again I like scissors)

If you had bought him one earlier he could have cut the umbilical cord with it. The "What did you use your SAK on" thread would have gotten a bit more interesting... :D.

Funny you mention that as a friend of mine that I got into SAKs actually said he wanted to do that when his baby was born. The look on his girlfriends face was priceless.  :o

Obviously it didnt happen, but I would so do it one day if the hospital would let me.  >:D

First off, Congratz Uncle Cap'n

Since the black Pioneer is one of my favorite SAKs, I have to go with that as my choice of knife. It's something that anyone would like and appreciate.

I know I'm going to be WAY in the minority here, but I think it'd be better to get a SAK with engravings on the scales, not the blade. I would absolutely NOT put a date on them in either case.

In the past, I've given coin proof sets for birthdays. That is a nice display item with a year on it to remember, and I think they look cool... and I know you're at least somewhat into coins too.

The knife you pick for your nephew isn't really an issue yet, and won't be for years. You may wish to hold off on that. For your brother, as has been pointed out, you don't really even need to engrave it. He'll remember just by possessing it, I think. Or, a plain silver alox Cadet could have something engraved on the handle.

Just my opinion. I don't expect it'll be the route you take.

Also. Congratulations!

Lynn makes a great point: why mess up a pretty blade with engraving? I for one hate it when Vic puts serial numbers (i.e. 50/22) on their limited Alox SAKs. It just ruins it. I'd much rather there be no engravings but if I had to choose, an engraving on the handle would be better...

You could get a Pioneer with you brothers name engraved on the scale, and his sons name and birthday engraved on the blade.

Alright so I did end up getting two black alox pioneers for my brother and his son. Im sure the engraving will turn out great.

Swissknifeshop has them for $29.50 shipped no tax which is cheaper than the silver alox pioneer.  hey I'm not complaining. Figured I would let you guys know if anyone is interested.

Just a thought on the engraving, could you have it done close to to the spine?

I'm thinking if it's done further from the cutting edge and their used the engraving should be far enough away to avoid any scratches from sharpening.
