Trail food?
on: March 06, 2014, 06:37:28 PM
Just wondering what you folks eat when out and about?  Day hikes, fixed base camps, hiking/camping etc etc all mean quite different foods to me, what about you lot?

I know they aren't universally loved, but for day hikes and mountain bike rides, Clif bars really do it for me. I'm sure there is better things out there but they pack a solid punch and I love the taste. Blueberry Crisp is delicious :D

Depends on the season too, not just hiking vrs camping.

I like Snickers bars for a quick pick me up and boost of energy but in the summer, especially here when we reach 40°C in the shade, forget it. In the summer I avoid anything that can melt.

For on the go and while moving I like something like granola bars, different kinds of nuts, salami sticks (depending on how much water I have available), fruit, both dried and fresh (apples mostly).

Funnily enough I had some Snickers bars away with me a couple of weekends ago for one of my winter wilderness camping trips.  I'd kinda forgotten how hard they are to eat when they are basically frozen. :D  Good though.

I do like a simple butter flapjack as a good hiking snack; fat, sugar and carbohydrates. Yumm.

Like others I will bring snack bars and trail mixes. If out for the day I will make a sandwich (no mayo, ketchup, lettuce, ect.) basically just meat and cheese to keep from getting soggy bread. The best backwoods foods are the ones you catch though. Fresh fish lunch or dinner is always welcome.

If its more of a camping trip than i'm much more prepared and bring the grill with plenty of meat to BBQ.  :tu:

Forgot to add. On those one day fishing trips I will bring about 4 of these with me in different flavors.  two for me and two for who ever is with me. Ill eat em all if I go alone!  :D love those things.

I usually take packaged food these days, but when I used to go in a group on day trips, we used to pack bagels, Spam and a chunk of colby cheese.  That was good eats out on the trail, and held up well.

Nowadays, I don't do anything over about a 6 mile day hike, and granola bars are what i usually pack.

Back when i was backpacking, I like tortillas and peanutbutter for breakfast (tortillas withstand being crammed in a pack better than most other bread products, and peanutbutter is light for the calorie density). That'd be breakfast and sometimes lunch. Add in GORP, and maybe dried fruit while on the trail. I usually would try not to have to cook more than once a day, and that would be dinner. Then it was usually some kind of pasta. I used to love the 'shells and cheese' meals that came with soft cheese goo along with the noodles. On the first night after a day of hiking on a trip to the smokie mountains, I had an entire box by myself for dinner. Something like 2400 calories. Ah... to be young and stupid again... :D

I have to admit that my usual hiking dinner consists of chicken flavoured Super Noodles with chunks of chorizo sausage added.  Light to carry, quick to cook (saving time and fuel) and surprisingly tasty when it's cold and you've had a long day walking.

Having never heard of 'Super Noodles', I had to see if they were what I thought they were, instant noodles. Which sent me on a long reading spree of 'ramen noodle' and 'instant noodle' and the like.

Also... yup. Being so quick to cook, and an easy one-pot meal that becomes pretty decent with the addition of one of any number of meat types (tuna packet, heavily cured meat, jerky, even spam), instant noodles are awesome for hiking.

It's either a limited or test variety. The SPAM site says "Limited availability in stores" - LINK - I just found it last week but haven't tried it.

You've got me thinking about having some fried Spam now.  It's been years since I've had any.

Fried is just about the only way I eat Spam. Its all about how thick you slice it in my opinion. Fried Spam over white rice is always

I made the mistake of once making a spam and velveeta sandwich on a bagel. I thought i was going to die from sodium overload. :D

As much as I rip on Spam, it's actually pretty good fried. Just as long as i don't have to think about the nutritional info.

Do you recommend cutting it thick or thin?  I can't believe I'm actually thinking about getting some for lunch.

I like it a bit thick most occasions. Nice and fried on the outside, but with a layer of cooked spam goodness.

Just experiment with different thicknesses.  :tu:

To be more exact i would try 1/4" to 1/2"

The things I end up doing because of this forum.   Not just buying, cooking and feeding SPAM to my daughter, but taking photographs of it as well. :-[  The taste was....evocative to say the least, took me right back to having exactly the same thing when I was a kid.  The memories were probably better than the taste, but I won't say it was wholly unpleasant either.  My daughter seems perfectly happy to eat it. :D

I like these retort pouch curries...I call them Indian MREs  :D I'll make regular or boil-in-the-bag rice to go with them...there is also prepared rice in pouches, by I haven't found one I really like yet.
