Noticed this thread a little late.

Day hike: chocolate and hotdogs to grill on a fire if its late autoumn/winter/early spring. Sandwiches during the late spring/summer/early autoumn.

Hiking with one night in a tent: bread, tube cheese, hotdogs or steaks, maybe some freezedried mashed potatoes and snacks. Whisky

Hiking with more than one night in a tent: freeze dried meals, bread, tube cheese and snacks. Whisky

Canoe trip with one or more nights in a tent/lavoouu/tarp: steaks, freezedried mashed potatoes, hot dogs, flour to bake flatbread for breakfast. Chocolate, potatochips, peanuts, beer, cola and whatever ekse I might want :D

Do you make "Stovies" Gareth? Maybe with instant potatoes and corned beef?

I do stovies at home, but I don't think I've ever done it out hiking.  I think I had stovies made with freeze-dried potatoes years ago and can't remember being that impressed. ;)

Proper stovies (in my house anyway) need par-boiled potatoes fried with fine chopped onion and corned beef.  Everything gets slow cooked on the hob until it all starts breaking down.  Yummy.

What kind of cheese holds up the best?

I've had good results with a wax rind cheese... but recently bought the small Babybel cheese and it got a little soft.

Bocks of cheddar do fine, depending on the temperature and size.

Any thoughts?

Necro-thread!  :woohoo:

I've never really taken cheese out that I can remember.  If I had to guess at one I think would do well I'd try something dry and crumbly like a Wensleydale.

For a day (any kind of day really) I'll just pack fruit and nuts.

For longer trips, I pack a selection of suimin, deb, szechuan beef, and other long life groceries. The truck has a water tank, so I can do fairly well with dehydrated stuff for a while, (including powdered milk, and pancake mix)

my "treat" is http://www.plumrose.com.au/hot-dogs/products/hot-dogs.html

I've never had them normally, so I'm not sure how they rate day-to-day, but after a week on the lam in the bush, they're right fine cuisine.

(I am known to eat the odd fish...but since this fine country requires you to get a permit to throw a line, I hardly bother anymore)
