A question about condition or knife grading
on: March 14, 2014, 10:13:00 AM

As the price of Swiss Alox is quite robust at the moment I got to thinking about grading of knives or more exactly what premium one grade has over another

for example:-

If we look at a red alox soldier form say 1964 in good condition as a base point at say $100 (which in this case I take to mean all the blades are full some wear on the alox coat and signs of use on the blade.)

What premium would a mint version of this knife command ?

My thoughts are ......
There are a lot of variables to consider but I think the Ratio of Good Condition Knives to Mint Knives in this case is so low I would expect a premium of at least 100% and would not be surprised at 500%

Also is it possible/useful to come up with a Grade Definition and Price Ratios such as

Poor   - 25%     Basket case
Used  - 50%     Heavy wear on the alox coat and blades are well used and may have been poorly sharpened and have lost some steel
Fair   -  75%     All the blades are full heavy wear on the alox coat and blades are well used but not damaged
Good -  100%    All the blades are full some wear on the alox coat and signs of use on the blade
VGood -150%    All the blades are full ,Perfect Alox with signs of use on the blade
Mint  -  200%    Perfect in every way

Most things are graded on an A-f scale.
Plus there wouldn't be a "200%", 100% would equal new or with no signs of wear
New wouldn't technically be be graded. The grading system is dedicated for used item IMO, since it's new, never used. NIP, new in package would be the designation

No sign of wear A+
little signs of wear on scales but immaculate tools would be A, so carried but never truly used
Most used would normally fall in between the B/B- grade, minor signs of wear on the scales and tools
C would be used with heavier signs of wear but not abused
D would be slightly abused to damaged
F is heavily abused/broken junk worthy of only being parts

These are C and D grade knives
