Those look pretty sweet Tim. Seems like Wenger is really throwing up some stiff competition to the Vic OHT.  :)

It does look nice and ergonomic.  I sure wish they would have set it up "tip up" though.

(Image removed from quote.)

The original Spyderco CLIPIT was introduced in 1981.We were the first company to use the clothing clip as part of our knife design. (Taken from the Spyderco website).

Have always been a Vic man I find this hard to say but here it goes.

After 27 years of having pocket clips on knives, Wenger beats Vic to the punch and gets theirs out first (or at all).

I don't see how the Wenger Ranger w/clip will be competition for the OHT because for something to be a "competition" the two parties have to be in the same race.

I love Victorinox but let's throw caution to the wind a little and lighten up.
You don't always have to be the OLDER, BIGGER, BROTHER have a little fun.

If Vic would offer a plain edge, Sentinel or an OHT with a clip, then at least you would have to decide if you like the Evo scales better or having the toothpick /tweezers and saw blade more.  That would be a "competition".

Hmmm...

My critique of this Wenger, starting with its pluses:

+Pocket clip: better late than never!  Beats its competitor.

+Blade: generous length, one-hand-opening, locking, plain edge - really can't ask for anything more.  Beats its competitor.

+Screwdriver/bottleopener: automatic lock makes this a superior design.

+Canopener: very useful implement for a variety of tasks, although lacking its competitor's small screwdriver.

+Awl: does the job, but perhaps not as versatile as its competitor's awl.

+Grips: ergonomic and textured.  Beats its competitor.

Now, the single minus:

-Corkscrew: WHY, WHY, WHY?  Why did Wenger have to ruin an almost perfect Ranger by including a useless f***ing corkscrew?  Loses to its competitor big time!  (OHT avoids a corkscrew, but instead includes a useful Phillips driver.)

This one detail means I'll never buy this Ranger.

If Wenger wants to offer a Ranger model with a corkscrew that'd be fine with me, if they would offer an identical Ranger model except with a useful Phillips driver rather than a f***ing corkscrew!

.

Thanks for the review. As usual it is the differences that make us interesting. Many people, including me, find spine mounted Phillips to be be pretty useless (much preferring inline) while finding the corkscrew useful for many things (holding mini-screwdriver, teasing knots out of rope, jewelry, etc.) not even counting opening wine (which I don't drink).

To each, his own...

I only wish that Wenger would offer two models of this Ranger - identical except one model with a Phillips and one model with a corkscrew.  That way everyone could be happy.

Seems that Wenger does this a lot, making various models that are nearly ideal for me - except they leave off a Phillips and include a corkscrew.

Thanks, J-sews - I need to order a few of those ASAP.

Seriously, I hate corkscrews so much that I long ago traded away or gave away any corkscrewed SAKs that I once had.

To me, corkscrews are ugly - they break up the smooth lines of a SAK and ruin its overall appearance.

However, lately I've been thinking of getting a Wenger S557.  That would be my first purchase of a corkscrewed SAK in many years - tolerable only because of its inline Phillips.

Like Tim said earlier its all about personal preference. Myself, I don't care for the corkscrew either. Or for that matter any of the implements on the backsprings. Luckily there is enough variety in SAKs that everyone can have one the way they like it.  :)

I agree there. I would prefer no spine mounted tools at all on my EDC knives. Although they are great to have in bug out bags or camping, etc..

I don't know about Rangers with Clips,

But I had a perv @ some Rangers over the weekend - from the single blades (non-one hander) to the fully kitted out Scissors jobby.

I'll look up the model shortly, but that last one was a beast. Dropping it would maim small children & animals.

The SakSelector just calls it the Ranger (1.77.14)

I was also tempted by the Wenger equivalent to the Waiter, but passed.
