A couple of Leatherman sheaths
on: March 13, 2014, 09:04:21 PM
This is my first post as I have only just found this place , I don't know why it has taken me so long .

Here are a couple of sheaths I've made for a Wave and a Skeletool .

It looks like leather to me. Should be in layers then sitched together.

That's what I was thinking, four thick pieces of leather, glued and trimmed to size, using the wood dowel for the edge, then stained, then the outer piece turned black, then glued to and stitched threw the layers? Am I close? JR

There is no wood or anything else in my sheaths , they are all leather . The edge or Welt is 4 layers of leather that has been trimmed , sanded and burnished by hand . Here is a photo of the Wave sheath during production which may help you to understand the process .

They look very nice but I prefer more slim sheaths. The ones I've made don't add much thickness to the tool, they're just used to carry and protect from scratches and the like.

Thanks for the compliments , I really appreciate them .

As for drilling or Awl , I do both depending on the individual sheath . Anymore than 3 layers of leather I usually drill . As the depth increases it is more and more difficult to achieve a good even stitch on the backside of the sheath . In my opinion the back of the sheath is as important as the front , and is a real indicator of skill and quality . Many makers give all of their attention on the front , and create a " shop front facade  " . I try to make a whole sheath .
A really good sheath maker that no longer produces sheaths once said    " show me a photo of the back of the sheath first , if the back is very good you can be 99% sure the front will be outstanding "
