Anyone make a Flyer SAK?
on: March 15, 2014, 01:33:28 AM
I recent came back from Hong Kong and on the looooooong flight home I was pondering, anyone make a SAK with out a blade and pokey bits and with scissors to fly?

I basically want to make a SAK Troubleshooter without a blade and awl. I carried a Troubleshooter in HK and it was very useful, I wonder if it would make a security passable tool set.

I think the 91mm scissors are to big to get through Ssecurity.

Hmm says here blades less than 4 inches for scissors are allowed, but who knows.

http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/prohibited-items

The plastic saks are harder to make bladeless since that damn corkscrew cutout is part of the blade layer.  Ive made a few bladeless alox models before though.  Steve replaced a blade with metal file too.

Agreed, that's probably why they made the Jetsetter. Metro, could 58 scissors be made to work in the larger frames? Because if that can be done then I'm pretty sure the rest would be fairly easy, well easy for you guys.

Scissors less than 4cm from pivot to tip are also allowed so scissors are a go. I can deal without the cork screw/Phillips since I would want an inline Phillips and mag glass.

I have all the parts, just a matter of cobbling them together for my first ever SAK build.

I wonder if the metal file would pass, seems to be safe enough.

Everything is TSA discretion, even if it says it's okay on their website if the person that is checking your stuff decides it's not then you can't take it even if you have a print out of the website :(

I should also throw in that security is going to be even more problematic on trips to China/ Hong Kong right now due to that airplane that is still missing and the mystery surrounding it's disappearance.

Yeah,I'd add a voice of caution here. From everything I've read the descresion of the security guys at the airports is the ruling guide. There's no point in building the tool just to hand it over.

I hate the idea of being with out a SAK or MT,especially in a situation where it could be a life saver, but in this day and age,it's just something that's not going to happen

True, it's more a thought exercise at this point. I have a crappy Chinese swiss champ that I could build into what I need and If it gets taken, oh well.

Sometimes I want to fly carry on only.

THIS!
  • Got through Zurich with 3 full size SAKs no problem.
  • In Amsterdam they confiscated a plastic flower and a potted bonsai next to me. I had to go through 3 pat-downs and two dog patrols to get to my flight.
  • In Oslo they threw away my 50 ml bottle of nose drops I almost choked to death on my way back.
  • In Munich they held me for 20 minutes because the guard decided I was smiling too much to be the one on the passport photo.
  • In Bucharest I saw them taking away pens, mini-scrissors and a baby's milk bottle.

If I find an hour this week, I am going to see about tackling the box of broken and used saks I got off Ebay many many months ago. Inside are a Swiss champ, a few tinkers, an explorer and a few climbers. Between them all, I should be able to make at least 2 of the bladeless flyer SAKs.

This being my first SAK build, I'll be looking at many threads for guidance.

In theory this should be flight legal. But I doubt "they" would allow you to take it on a plane.

I think it would be disqualified due to the scissors, because scissors are very dangerous

I mean technically it should be alright as scissors ARE allowed on flights, but like you said its all up to there discretion. I have personally travelled many times with my Style PS without even being asked about it, but the scissors are much smaller.

Nope. The Leatherman Style PS and Victorinox Jetsetter are both TSA compliant.

On European flights its actually legal to have a SAK (blade length less than 6cm). Medicine and baby food do not fall under the liquid restriction. Pens are legal anyways.

This shows that the law and the practice are quite far apart.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Ok. I did it. My first SAK mod ever. Introducing the Deluxe Flyer Pro. Theoretically this will get past security and onto planes.

I took apart a broken down and dirty Swiss Champ and took out the stuff that would be deemed a sharp EXCEPT for the scissors. The are the number one used tool when traveling (for me at least). I also made this with a lot of preloved tools so I won't be too sad of this gets taken away at the gate. The liners are also pretty beat up, it's a user not a pleaser.

So, the final tool set is flat/combo, can opener, pliers, scissors, inline Phillips, mag glass, file (with a rounded tip), awl (which I may dull down or something), hook and small flat driver.

Finish it off with a new set of standard scales with the T&T.

It's not pretty but it'll work, especially the side with the blank cut out for the missing Phillips or corkscrew.

Very, very cool even for a EDC SAK not just one to take on flights with you. I have a feeling the awl might get it confiscated as well as the scissors even though the scissors are within the "legal" length. Only one way to find out though.  :pok:  :D

Very nice. Even in Vermont, there are an increasing number of places where you aren't entrusted with a pocket knife. If I was spending more time at the State House, I would carry something like this. But I wouldn't take it on a plane. As others have pointed out, the last word varies on which screener (they aren't even agents) who looked you over.
