The older file wasn't stainless steel I don't think, and required a hard chrome plating. It made it a bit less aggressive. The newer stainless steel file has a more aggressive surface and a different tooth pattern cut into it, making it even more effective. I have tools with both files, and the new one is a massive improvement. It chews through most metals without fuss.
