Making the Wingman Knifeless
on: March 26, 2014, 07:32:16 PM
I am looking to make the Wingman my everyday carry MT. One of the issues is when I commute for work, I go thorugh multiple areas where knife restrictions make life difficult for me in regards to knives. I was thinking of removing the knife from a Wingman. I wonder how practical that is (it seems fairly easy to take apart), and is there any thing I could put in the knifes place, seems a waste to leave a spot empty.

I'm not entirely sure.... But maybe the saw of a sidekick?

That would likely be just as problematic as a knife (I am getting on an off commuter rail and subways for commute). I've seen someone put a key on theirs.

There's nothing else that would have the possibility of just a drop-in mod, I think...

A key might work, if it works with the pivot-size....

I'm sure one of the actual modders around here has more ideas about this  :tu:

Hi fellow newbie scottder

Planning a thread on this but here's a heads-up.  Also wanted to make my Wingman UK legal carry.  There is a really helpful thread called "Kid Friendly Wingman" to get you thinking.

Encouraged by that I removed the combo blade which I didn't like anyway.  I tried the package opener on the outside but felt that was even more threatening than the blade.  (In comparison the Dime package opener seem non-threatening and just as effective).  What I did was fitted an ex-Gerber combo can-opener/cap lifter.  Needed grinding down from 2.6mm to 2mm.  I feel its fairly non-threatening and a really handy outboard tool.

What did I do with the detested combo blade?  Cut it down to the serrated section and fitted it in lieu of the Wingman can-opener/cap lifter.  Needed grinding down a little to clear the plier jaw and a little bending  but now a great little non-locking cord cutter.

Why did I not transfer the Wingman can-opener/cap lifter?  TBH I can't remember though it pains me to say it that Gerber cap lifters have Leatherman's licked.  Even (or especially) the Dime.  Also having cut my teeth on SAKs I like away action can-opening.

Just thinking out loud - but maybe teh 108 mm Combo-tool would fit?!
The pivot area should be big enough and you get a sawblade without point and a bottle/can opener  and screwdriver.

A vic scissor fits the wingman rather nicely, so I can´t see why a Combo tool would not.
