squit coating removal
on: March 31, 2014, 06:28:09 PM
I'm wondering if there is a easy way to remove the anodized coating on a squirt.

I'm going to take my dremel with a wire wheel after it but I thought asking first before I do anything might not be a bad idea.
It's got a small plastic piece for holding the tweezers I don't want to melt.

The one I want to strip is a radio shack e4

I got a pic but photobucket is being slow.

Any ideas?

It's gonna be part of my edc and its red finish really sticks out.

I'm picky. I like my edc to sort of match

I don't have personal experience with this instance, but I think a wire wheel will be too much and will end up messing up the scales. I unfortunately don't know a better way other than maybe use some heavy grit sand paper then follow the steps used for cellidor scales working up to a very fine grit before polishing. Depending on your desired finish of course.

I think fine grit is the way to go and with a little effort should have that red gone in no time. :tu:

Ya fine wet/dry sandpaper will take it off pretty easy.  Id use 400 or maybe 600 grit.   :tu:

You could use chemical methods but thats messier than needed for this job.

Had I seen this topic before, that's exactly what I would have told you: the nooks and crevices, especially near the rivets are magnets for the oxidation, and look crappy.
I had a well worn PS4, and tried various grit abrasive paper, oven cleaner, a dremel with wire wheels, and also polishing mops. Still it looked a little crappy, even after all that work. I don't think its worth the effort, personally.

I don't like reading that.

the acid I'm using is having a effect but its going very slow.

hmmmm

what to do.

I think I'm going to have to carefully sand it off with a dremil if oven cleaner don't work at home.

change o plans

well I think I'm gonna to send it to leatherman.

while using it writing this post the back spring for the flat driver broke.

That sux! I don't know about some of their keychain-sized tools like the P4, just so many problems with them. Luckily the Micra and Style CS seem to be pretty reliable...

The PS4 was the first LM i ever bought and then returned.  Just felt wrong to me.  I was used to the P4 which I still carry daily and its great.  The PS4 in comparison just felt flimsy to me.

Don't do it! The RadioShack E4 I sent it discontinued, you'll get back a PS4, that's it.

I've had hit and miss luck with the two style cs's ivd had the first was sloppy the second perfect.

every micra I've seen has been good.

I have had my share,of bad luck with the little leathermans

I hope they will exchange mine for one that's not broke.

I can live with the wrong color but not a broken tool.

I hope they send you a working one Joel. The problem with Leatherman is they're notorious for discontinuing perfectly good tools like the PST and quite a few others I won't mention them all. I don't think they're very in tune with the market. Otherwise they'd still produce the Fuse which is a perfectly good multitool.

I'm hoping they will have a e4 in stock.

I really like the wire stripers.

Now im going to ask questions before I do something stupid again

it looks like the spirit ps4 can be taken apart fairly easy.

I'd like to keep the stripper head off the e4 if they don't make it anymore.
will the e4 head fit in a ps4 body ???

it looks complicated but I should be up to doing a swap if possible.

I might just have to start a new topic

this is gonna be a project im sure Il need help with.

they should replace it with one of them.
