This is the video that inspired me...

I cut down a cheap ratchet I had laying around

Cut down the ratchet handle (what used to be) to length... stuck in a 1/4 12mm socket and epoxyed them together... adjusted the square hole of the ratchet (stuck in a small piece of license plate) so that all my tools can fit.

Hello all, first time/long time here, and I am determined to be a member of this club! I have a Charge Tti, (also Surge and Crunch) and I just picked up a Rebar for a smokin' deal at Canadian Tire ($27-in store clearance do to discontinuation, SCORE!) and I am going to make my Charge a ReCharge! Now, I had been planning on sending in the Charge for warranty, I bought it used and there is some looseness in the large bit driver, the retention clip is a little bent. I was bouncing back and forth though, because other than that it's pretty good. It's from '13, and it's been used, small chip around the tip of the PE among other minor things. ANYWAY I want to learn to sharpen my blades and I decided just before I left for the post office that I would swap the bit holder from my Surge and go ahead with the mod today. My dad is bringing by his Dremel in a half hour and I'm going to use the method that leaves the scissors intact, and I'll take a little material off of the one "jowel". HOWEVER upon loosening the pin screw for the inside tools on the large bit side (after heating) something unanticipated happened; the scale began to bend out as though pressure was being applied to it from the inside, I'm guessing the liner lock for the PE. I haven't seen any documentation of the exact procedure used for taking out inner tools on a Charge tti, and I assumed it was a simple procedure, the Surge, having no scales was easy. Does anyone have any tips for keeping the scale from bending out when removing inner tools? I'm thinking maybe clamp the scales so they stay in place while loosening the pin. Any advice appreciated, I don't want to break my beloved Charge on my first mod attempt

I don't have a Charge so this may not work but maybe you'll have to loosen the plier side as well to equalize the pressure on the scale.

Thanks for the support! Really wishing I was doing this with the Wave right now though... It's going to be awesome when it's done, but with the scales, it makes aligning everything really hard. Getting the blades, washers, pliers and it's washers all aligned enough to get the pin to go through is near infuriating. Used Vaseline to help the washers stick to the surfaces, and basically just poking around inside with a small screwdriver to move everything into place. I did get one handle of the Charge attached to the Rebar head, and the blade lock pins operate and all is well

Have to take off to go teach guitar lessons, have to get the other side done later on. I have so much respect for everyone in this club right now!!

Hey there duFunk.

Don't stress over the scales, they will be fine.
Hold them down with your hand, swing them out of the way or just remove them completely.
Also the large bit driver from the surge won't fit in the charge.

A headlamp, reverse tweezers and the small bit driver bit from the charge all help a lot when re assembling.
Ohh and take your time.
Have patience, lots of patience.

so for aligning all of the parts/washers to get the pin through, am I doing it right by using a small screwdriver to kinda poke everything around, while clamping the scales tight to keep it all together, until it all looks straight and pushing the pin in and poking some more?

Pretty much.
I normally leave the topside scale pushed around to one side.
Then add the parts and washers one at a time, slowly pushing the pivot through.
Once the pivot is through both sides of the frame add the spacer (or washer and tool) and the scale.
Tighten the screw and test that everything works properly.
Only after all work is done and you're happy do you remove one screw at a time and apply loctite.
It gets easier the more you do.

Right on. I'm chomping at the bit to get home and get the other side done. Glad to know the surge driver won't fit too. It seems to be the same... I dig the Rebar though for how simple it is. And it slides into my little pocket so nicely! I wish I could have a normal one with the good jaws as well..

It took me a few hours to get back together, but It is finally complete! I didn't want to ditch the scissors,or shorten them, since they are the perfect length for cutting electrical tape, so I went with grinding a bit of the "jowel" down to accomidate. It's pretty tricky as it's dam near impossible to see where it's making contact. I did end up having to grind a bit off of the locking pin on the PE side, because it's still about 2-3mm from closing. If anyone has any good pics of how much they took off to get it to clear the scissors, I'd love to see them. I don't want to take off any more material going in blind...

Here's a closeup of the grind. Dremel with a grinding wheel is what I used. I tried putting masking tape on the plier and closing to try and get an imprint of where it's hanging up, but it wasn't very visible. For now it closes almost all the way and blades open up, so I'm holding off until I figure out how to determine the exact location that needs further excavation. I am hoping that it's strength hasn't been compromised, but these pliers are pretty badass!

Modded wave, added Vic scissors, tweezer, toothpick and pen. I welded some extra material to the scissors so they would lock up nicely and close smoothly. Ground guthook in serrated blade, swapped the head for the head of a rebar, added rebar awl. Added 2 aluminium blocks to the side for comfort. Removed can opener and added pointy stick

And finally changed the flat driver to a chisel. My mini bit driver is so short because it broke of.

I used this same video to make a ratchet for my Wave. Its now with Kev but when I used it it worked great. The idea of having a ratchet for our MTs is really nice. I may have another go at making one again.
