Minor mod: fixed (ST 300) Phillips instead of the bit driver on my Surge.

Thanks awl :D: :hatsoff:

One note of caution to candidate Surge modders: take care when twisting or otherwise removing the plier head tab to make way for the fixed Phillips: the lock spring is actually the same piece of metal and mine became de-tensioned slightly in the process. I had to temporarily remove the lock and bend the spring back a bit with some tricks to reinstate tension.

This is the new setup in the sheath:

Ahhhh....does the bit extender fit on the fixed Phillips?  Excuse my ignorance, I've never seen a Surge or the bit extender in person. I was wondering why you would trade the flexibility of the bit changer for the fixed Phillips, but it makes sense now!

The adapter (aka Removable Bit Driver) fits over the head of the Phillips and houses either bits or the bit extender (both can be of the normal 1/4" variety as well as those from Leatherman).

It has started to rain somewhat more than is perfectly comfortable and I have tested some tool configurations  that would make my new Rebar more versatile. Between the Wave and the Rebar I'll probably prefer to carry the latter due to the fact that the Wave's OHO blades are frowned upon in German urban environments, but I like the Wave tool set. So, I've embarked on a fusion project, somewhat along the lines of my ST 300 VX project. Good thing the Wave tools can be dropped straight into the Rebar handles.

Behold the Rebar VX below. It is not dissimilar to the one shown  here but it retains the awl, to the detriment of the lanyard loop. To make that work I had to reorder the tools slightly as the awl is relatively wide.

Disclaimer: I am, for now, not able to use the disclaimer that no MTs were hurt in the process. The Wave has lost some tools and the plan I had for building a ruggedised Wave in parallel to the Rebar VX has not worked... the Rebar's fixed Phillips and medium flat screwdriver will not fit into the cramped Wave handles without major surgery even if the plier head tabs are removed. That Wave is therefore out of service until further notice. Good thing I have a second Wave...

Thanks guys!

In related news, the donor Wave is back in service in the announced ruggedised version. Apart from removing one plier head tab some grinding was necessary on the fixed Phillips and medium flat driver that were inserted. Now the tool closes almost properly again :D

Thanks Ponch :hatsoff:. Need to do some more judicious grinding to make it perfect but it will do for now.

It also means that I can state as a disclaimer that the disclaimer that I couldn't use the disclaimer that no multitools were hurt is no longer valid. :D

I have decided to christen this Wave the Wave R.

The Wave R has some space left for an additional narrow and either low-profile or short tool; I might just need to get rid of the second plier head tab in the former case. Any suggestions, or even offers, for tools befitting the "rugged" philosophy? I have thought of an awl... though the Rebar awl is too massive...

one option would be to take another flat driver from a Rebar or Kick (or Blast or Fuse or...) and grind it down into an awl. I haven't personally done this, but I have seen it done by others.

another option is to put scissors back in there... not sure if you consider that to be "rugged" or not ;) but it does give it a similar look to the OG Wave. I restored a Wave and did something similar a while back.

I replaced the small bit driver with an awl cut from a flat driver, should be a thread around here somewhere, knifeless charge or something.
