I am thinking that the pins that are head rests in the Wave/Charge are in the way for the Rebar plier head (it is a bit wider) and it doesn't require them being in there for it to close correctly :salute: So you will have to do away with them to make the Rebar head work but not sure that you will be able to go back to the regular plier head after removing said pins

I have never done this mod myself so this is only here say and I may be wrong though  :D

Straight drop in... but scissor prevents full closed position...

My approach was to cut down the the scissors...

Another approach was to grind down a bit the part of the plier head which hits the scissors...

A friend of mine removed the scissor altogether...

Thanks for chiming in jaya  Grinding on the scissors would be way easier to go back to the other plier head if you wanted :like: :tu:

Thanks chaps .

My Wave R no longer has scissors and the plier head rest tabs had to be removed already to make way for the fixed Phillips, the small fixed screwdriver and the awl... judging by what you guys are telling me, I fear that these tools might be in the way of the Rebar plier head...

One approach is to grind down the internal tools (fixed Phillips, scissors, and awl are the main culprits). This is what I do for the majority of my ReCharge/Mini Surge mods. I'd be happy to show you some before/after pics if you're interested.

Another approach is to grind down the Rebar plier head itself. I have never tried this as I fear it would compromise the strength of the pliers.

A different approach is to completely remove the blade locking pin mechanism from inside the handle (not just breaking off the plier head rests), then re-peening the handle. I believe this allows enough extra space for the tools and the plier head to coexist nicely. :D I haven't tried this approach either, but I'm pretty sure that Dr. Z has done it.

Hope this helps. :salute:

Thanks Breezy... I think I'll try swapping the heads first, judging by appearances it might *just* work out without  (much) further grinding on the tools- I already did quite a bit of that to make the three new tools fit. Thanks for the tip regarding the blade locks... but I think I'd only consider doing away with that in a real emergency. I had also considered grinding at the pliers head but share your misgivings, especially in view of a fellow member's report on broken pliers...

please keep us posted! :D

just to clarify, the blade locks themselves will still function just fine... what you lose is the pins that prevent the main blades from opening while the pliers are deployed. :salute:

You know what I would love? A thread on how multitools work. Or at least how the different parts of them work. Types of locks etc. What this funny-looking thing inside the handle does.
With diagrams or labeled photos. :dd:
Sometimes people refer to parts and I'm not sure what they are on about. I'm sure I'm not alone.
I would find that much more interesting than "this tool came out in these colours" or "the awl on this model was slightly changed in June 2009" etc.

Bob (J-sews) was a man who has done a few threads of that type on different parts of MTs over the years and was a really helpful guy always when I first joined

Hmmm... yes, good idea. I have a smaller project ongoing in the course of which I might be able to shoot some pics, let's see.

Meanwhile the gremlins have been at it in D_T's dungeons...

Thanks to 5hif7y and Poncho65 for the inspiration :tu::hatsoff: - I simply could not resist.

Color swapping is a good way to make you feel as though you have 2 new tools :like: I like the way you swapped the fasteners on the cutters as well :tu: :like:

Not wanting to steal Ponch's thunder (not at all, honest guv') here is the latest incarnation of my Wave R, now sporting a wicked looking awl - courtesy of Breezy12 who was kind enough to donate a spare Rebar small/medium screwdriver which I proceeded to modify forthwith. In the first pic it is in repose adjacent to the Rebar screwdriver that I likewise had to mod to fit. Last pic shows the original, with markings indicating what was in store for it... huahahah...

Thanks, ironraven :tu:

Wave parts into a Rebar are normally a straight drop-in - you may just want to check there is no collision between tools or with the plier head, as well as whether nail nicks are still fully accessible (this has prompted a minor re-ordering of the tools in mine after I took the detailed pics).

I realise this was not the question, but just as a heads-up: Rebar tools into a Wave is somewhat different. The lock surface contours are identical between Wave and Rebar (indeed, so are some of the tools) but the Wave has less space in the handles, so you'll probably end up needing to grind off portions of the larger Rebar tools as well as removing the plier head rest tabs.

 I've never tagged on to the nerve gas connotation of the acronym I gave my mods...

Thank yo ufoe the info. I'm thinking about a mini-surge. These tidbits will likely help. Not sure if I'm going to cannablilze parts or buy spares.

Note for Rebar modders: just discovered that the thumb tab of Wave scissors will probably need shortening by about 2 mm to entirely clear the Rebar inner pliers spring in the handle so that it can lie flat and not obstruct the pliers.
