New member here. Looks like I will be able to join this club soon.  My wife was going to get me a new leatherman for my birthday since I’ve been carrying my Charge ALX for years. I went online to look at the new models, and nothing looked much better for what I need then the Charge that I already have.

As luck would have it I stumbled upon these forums and saw my first Re-Charge.   I was hooked!  The wire cutter on my Charge was all but useless.  The only time I tried to use it, it didn’t cut very well and left a notch in the blade when it was done. The wife ordered me a Rebar last night for my project. I opted for BO, because I think the look of the black head with the black scales will look great.

So next week I’ll be taking the plunge into modding my Charge.  First I’ll replace the head, but later I might try replacing the small screwdriver.  I wanted that option back before I had Lasic. But now I never use the small driver.  Do you guys know if the awl from the rebar will fit in its place, or is the awl too thick?

Thanks guys!
Nice to have you with us.
The awl should fit in fine but for the handles to close you'll probably need to reprofile the awl a little.
More about it here. Looking forward to seeing what you do.

I received my sacrificial BO Rebar today. I had hoped that the black oxide would have matched the black anodized scales better, but it still looks good IMO. It matches better in person, the BO sure doesn't photograph well. It might just be my phone.

Next I'm going to try swapping the awl from the Rebar with the micro driver on my ALX. I know I'll have to shave a little off the awl so it doesn't hit the rebar head. It also looks like it might be a hair thicker than the micro driver. I'll measure it with calipers before I start the swap.

Wingman scissors ? Did they fit right in or was there a little grinding work ?

there's a little bit of grinding required. at a minimum, the pivot hole needs to be enlarged to fit the Wave/Charge pivot. when I modded my skinny Charge, I also had to make some slight adjustments to the locking face to get the liner lock to properly engage, but no such modification was needed on Kampfer's Mini-Surge.

I haven't actually tried it, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't fit in that spot.

I can't remember what thread it was mentioned in, but we were talking about what tool Leatherman uses to assemble/disassemble the knurled pivot screws. I sent Leatherman a email asking for any and all info they could give me on this as well as if they made the tool to do this in house or had them made for them. This is what I was sent back.

Thank you for contacting us with your questions.

Unfortunately, the questions you are asking are not something that we are able to provide with answers.   We are not at liberty to share names of products or sources for our parts or processes.  I’m sure you can understand the reasoning behind that decision.

Part of that reason is we do not recommend anyone take the tools apart – or make modifications to the tool - as that may void the warranty.

Thank you for your understanding of the above reasons on why I am unable to provide you with the answers you are requesting.

I can't blame them for not wanting to share that info.  They'd probably end up with getting a bunch more tools sent in for warranty work because someone screwed something up.

I don't think so. The security torx on the Wave is easy enough to get ahold of yet they've continued to use the same fastener to this day.

I dunno, it sounds reasonable to me. If a customer asked how to dismantle our products so they could modify them I'm sure I'd say pretty much the same. I'm not going to start telling you what processes or tools we use to put our stuff together with either.
