I picked up another one like this on the weekend at a local thrift shop for $3.  I haven't had a good look at it to see if it's a knockoff or not yet though.

I found all the screw/nut mechanisms in folding shovels are problematic, they become lose during use by it self, and take a while to deploy and fold in. Much prefer a short fixed shovel myself. Here is a photo of the firing position I dug for myself with Soviet shovel. The short length is handy for digging in tight spaces.

Well I found my shovel, and am happy with it.

The shovel comes in a handy carrying case.

Slowly taking the shovel out of its enclosure...

Here it is free at last. This shovel has an interesting locking mechanism. Rotate that textured section and it will eventually lock in place. Loosening that section enough allows the shovel to fold upon itself.

This is one well made shovel. The nice thing...it folds into a very small package.

Unfolded, this shovel is a good size.

So I am very happy with this North 49 folding shovel. It is compact when stowed away, and large enough for some good use.
