Could the vic scissors go into the mini surge?
Others here done something similar
, I am looking into it

enki_ck posted some great pics of his Vic scissors in a Charge... I'll be trying this out in the near future. :)

I just wish I knew how leatherman heat treats their blades. I've heard of problems with their blades chipping/snapping. God himself can hand you the perfect piece of steel, but if it's poorly heat treated, it will perform like a sharpened piece of poo. This is the deciding factor in whether I make my own blade or buy theirs. I am leaning more toward making it out of 1084 right now. If I decide to make it I'll make a thread showing my process. I first need to put handle scales on a full tang knife I'm almost done with though.

Have you had any other S30V blades to compare it to? I'm totally not trying to sound like a know-it-all or anything, I just know from experience not to trust a knife based solely on what kind of steel it is.

I'm probably not the best person to ask on this... I haven't had any issues with the Leatherman S30V blades, but I don't have any other S30V blades to compare them to. I think the closest comparison I have would be a Spyderco Delica with a ZDP-189 blade.

and you don't sound like a know-it-all. ;) I think your advice is spot on -- trusting a knife solely based on the blade steel is foolish.

Yeah, I think I'm going to first try to make it out of 1084 before buying one of their blades. Not only because I'm suspicious of their blade quality, but also because I have that desire we all have to make this stuff myself before resorting to buying a pre-made version.

When I make it, I don't think I'm going to be making a tutorial on it, but I will post progress pics (in a dedicated thread of course, I'm not going to hijack this one haha). I'll leave the knife making tutorials for the dedicated knife forums. I'll start on it as soon as I finish with my current knife project (a 10" full tang knife) and I work more on organizing my workshop (my basement), though that project will probably never end LOL.

You should definitely write about it here in this forum, it's where that sort of stuff belongs too...and in the Leatherman forum, of course.

I guess I'll make a bit of a write up about it then, going though it as I do it. It'll be fun, because I've never had to make something where I'm replicating the shape and dimensions of something else. When I make things, I usually don't even use a ruler lol.

Here's a question: If you could have a different kind of blade/tool to replace the serrated blade, what would it be?

Reason I ask is I actually ground down the serrated blade to make a straight edge, because after 2 years of owning the wave I used the serrated blade exactly once. I'm thinking about replacing the serrated blade with my 1084 blade, keeping the 420hc, and use both at the same time to really test the difference. Either that or make something entirely new. I'm not sure yet.

Well if you're keen on making another PE blade out of 1084 then at least make it with a gut hook. It also doubles up as strap cuter and can come handy. It adds to variety ;)

Also, if you're not 100% sure between the PE and SE edge, why not making it a combo edge?

Just few thoughts...that's all. ;)

No, the point is I have no use for the serrated blade, and want to make something different. I just don't know what to put there instead, and i'm looking for ideas.

I might just make the gut hook though. The problem is I don't have a good way to sharpen something like that.

Nice mod. How is the feel now?

I was playing with the similar idea but was afraid that if I 'shave' more of the edge it will only make it sharper.

Cheers!

Many found the Charge series are more comfortable to grip because the Wave's edge on scale.
I have small hands and like the Stainless steel look so I stick with Wave.

After this mod the scales are more comfortable than before.

Random thoughts:
After "break-in" period, now I can flip the Mini-Surge pliers open one hand like a butterfly knife.
Comparing the Charge, the Wave frame is steadier, absolutely no flex on its handles in close position while Charge has about 1mm of play.

I figured out if you take a thin metal bar (like 1/8" thick) and twist the pliers on it each way, it will loosen them up instantly. Worked with every multitool I've had so far. After doing that prices with mine, the handles swing just by gravity when open, but there is still no play.

Never mind, I guess if you are not his friend, you can not see it.
Here it is

Birthday boy: After six years, it's time to finally replace my trusty old Wenger Evo.14 Swiss Army Knife for this Leatherman Charge AL. It's quite a big step up (in terms of both size and heft) but I can definitely see myself using this a lot more. Thanks Kampfer for the (late) 18th birthday gift!

Birthday boy's friend: didn't connor give you a victoronox for your birthday

Birthday boy: That Victorinox Huntsman is going in my car as an on-the-road tool where I'll definitely need it.
This Charge is going in my EDC.

Kampfer:  I hope the MT will serve you well for years to come, Charge on!

Black and red for me but great picture and mods.

Hmm this got me thinking you should do up another Mini Surge in BO.

Speaking of which, if anyone cares, I found the s30v blade to be better than the 154cm blade (I got both). The 154cm chips too easily when sharpening.

Very nice LM, Kampfer. I like the seat belt cutter. On mine, I took off the serrated blade completely and stuck the 154cm blade I got into that slot so when one blade gets dull, I can use the other until I get around to sharpening it.
