Peanuts

Peanuts, children’s barlows really but some people like them…

The Peanut is small and has two blades; a main clip point blade and a secondary spear point blade, like a Barlow. However, it is smaller than a Barlow and has two bolsters.
It is a jack type knife, similar to the trapper and the Barlow; with two blades on one end which makes it thicker than it would have been if the blades were on opposite ends, but also shorter.

Picture time:
From the top: Colt, Steel Warrior, Case, Case.
The two Case XX knives have synthetic handles, the Colt bone and the Steel Warrior horn.

Notice the unusual spear point main blade of the CT214 Colt (available with a clip point one too)

The Colt is a hefty peanut.

Some comparison pictures with a Buck mini toothpick, a Victorinox Classic and an Imperial Schrade small trapper.

The main blades are similar in length but the one of the mini toothpick is thinner

See how thin the mini toothpick and the Classic are

The Cases weigh about 35g, the Colt 51g, the Steel Warrior 39g, the classic 21g, the toothpick 24g and the Schrade 38.

In many ways the small stockman seems like a good option as you get two large blades for similar weight.

The classic is also good if you only need a small blade and you also get the scissors, the file, etc.

Personally I like the mini toothpick since if I am going to go light I want something really thin and light and only one, decent sized, blade.

I do not really see the point of the Peanut, though I love the Barlow. (I usually have a Manager or a Micra etc. on me anyway, for the small blade if I need one.)

So:
The two Case peanuts and the Colt have polished blades, springs, bolsters and half stops, whereas the, cheaper, steel warrior does not. They were all flat ground and the Colt has a long nail nick.
All were decently finished, with good walk and talk, but the Case’s finish and feel was better, with the Colt a bit behind.
The springs on the Case ones are pretty strong.

Nice pictures Jack; the Case xx is the iconic peanut.

Gareth, the Colt seems to copy the SAKs by having two, similar, spear point blades. I like the idea of having a choice between two different styles (so I carry a Victorinox pruner)
The Colt is nice looking and a lot cheaper than the Case too.

Since there is interest in the Colt:

From what I now the Colt is made in China by the same people that make RR, Buck, indian head etc.
Colt has specified a higher finish and the knife feels a step above its other Chinese relatives. It has half stops, a shiny finish and comes in a nice, cardboard, box. (I did buy a few Colts a few years ago and all were decent)

The only issue I have with it is that the long nail nick of the main blade is hidden behind the small blade, so it is difficult to open. It is something that can be fixed by filing the kick, but I should not have to do it.
There was some grit in the pivot when I got it but I did manage to remove it.

I have not used it properly (or any other peanut) so I have no idea how solid it will be, but based on who makes them, their standard of finish and the good reputation they have it should be a fine knife to carry.
It has a lot of presence.

This was bought a few years ago so the newer ones may be even better (or worst)

Or, buy a Barlow  :D

Here's my Case pocket worn old red bone penut. Decided to get some EDC time with it today. I think I might try to get a CV steel Penut in the future. I've found that it cuts considerably better than the stainless steel blades. Cool Thread!  :tu: :like:
