Spirit sent back under warranty
on: June 09, 2008, 12:43:04 PM
Hello Fellow Toolers of the Swiss Orientation...

Ah well... she's gone back now. Dont know if you guys remember, but I had the Spirit that had quite a bit of play in the pliers. Well I sent it back to Burton McCall here in the UK, and I've just recieved a letter saying she's off to Swissterland for a little 8 to 10 week break in the health and fitness spa! Gutted - I was hoping for a new one... 2 months without my works tool/stress reliever is going to be tough. At least I've got the Cybertool 34 to cause complete carnage with!  >:D

Another subject - How long do you UK guys think that we'll be allowed to carry our SAKs here in the UK? Knifes getting an awful lot of bad press here now, thanks to a very small minority of idiots that don't deserve to be on this planet in the first place. Just my 2 shillings and six pence worth. (and no, I'm not that old  :D)

Tough break on the Spirit wait mate :(

As for the other question, in a nut shell I think Sak's will always be ok, MT should be ok (especially in the hand's of the over 30's) but one handed knives and tool's are definitely on borrowed time IMO.

If your bored and like bad writting, here's my thought's on the issue...

Bad writing is my favorite... :P

As for the SAK and multitool thoughts, remember, the first shot has already been taken against them.  A few years ago the state of Michigan looked at outlawing multitools and multifunction knives based on the potential for use as a break and enter tool.  It was trashed rather quickly, but that's the thing about an idea- once it's brought forward once, it is much easier to review and bring up again.

Bottom line is, if you want to break into someone's house, leave your multitool at home!

This is interesting to me cause now it seems three members on this board have had problems with Vic plier heads, Towsers, Leatherman123, and me. Are we just using them harder then others on the board, or did we just get three bunk tools? I would really like to find out.

I ordered a Swisstool RS last week for a little experiment and it should be here tomorrow. I still haven't sent my Swisstool X in for warranty work yet, so I am going to EDC the RS for a couple of months and use it in the same fashion I used my X, then compare the two to see if the plier head loosens up as badly as my X did. I am very curious about this and will be posting my results in the swiss forum.

If they send everything back to Switzerland, I still have a long time to wait for my poor Atlas.  :(

I was hoping for a new one, too, but it's been over a month, so...

I'd drop them an email just to find out what the score is mate :)

It's my understanding that they only send it back to Switzerland for serious repair, everything else is done by the importer's :)

Towser, a quick remedy would be to buy another Spirit, and when the refurbished one returns, sell it!

Ok, but now my question to you is how are they holding up? I know the Surge is your favorite tool, but have you been putting the new Swisstools through their paces?

They have held up very well! If the SwissTool had OHO blades I would EDC it!

My RS arrived today and its the 2005 plier head whereas my X that has the problems was a 2002. Which model did they send you as replacments that had the problems?

I have sent a Spirit back to Burton McCall in the past . While the pliers were ok this one had play in the handle springs ( I think Def may remember me asking about it over at SOSAK ) . I too got a letter from Burton McCall saying they had to send it back to Switzerland and did I want to wait 8 - 10 weeks . I phoned them and said go ahead . From what I remember it was back in about 2 -3 weeks  :D Fully mended . I have sent Swisstools back to them twice for play in the blades and pliers and these were replaced and back within a week . I've now had so many Swisstools go through my hands that I now realise a little play is nothing to worry about .
I've never had a problem with Burton McCall , always top service  :D

I sent mine in through an outdoor retailer. Later, I found out it took them 12 days (twelve) just to ship to Victorinox. So it'll be slightly over a month it's in repair this Sunday.
