Classic collectors appreciation thread.
on: May 04, 2014, 10:55:12 PM
I don't now if there is one, or if anyone had ever thought of one, but I was wondering if there was ever a classic appreciation  thread?

I mean, of all the SAK's, the classic is the one that has the most widespread use among non knife or multitool aficionado's that bother to carry any kind of pocket knife or multitool.

I know my own day to day life, a classic on my keyring is the most used of all my pocket knives or other edc stuff, aside from maybe the small flashlight in my pocket. No matter if it's just opening mail, or a UPS box, or one of those plastic blister packages that defy tooth and nail, I must use my classic at least once a day for something. The little scissors make a great emergency cutter for a broken nail, there's file for the same, and the SD tip fits all those little phillips screws that hold the industrial world together.

I know that the humble little classic has been my only knife/tool on several vacations where we flew over san's knife to go through customs and security easier. It's been handy as a thumb on so many occasions I've lost count.

And it was one of the knife magazines, either Blade or Knives Illustrated, I can't recall, that had the little classic as their cover photo, with the caption and inside story how it was the worlds most confiscated knife at airports. The story is that of the 35 million SAKs that Victorinox makes per year, a bit over 9 million of them are the classic. They sell not to just individuals, but advertising companies that put corporation logo's on them, team names, and even the Presidential seal for Lyndon Johnson.

And I don't know of any other SAK that comes in a color scheme that shows anything from a sneaker to a zebra hide. You could in fact make a whole collection of seeing how many different classics you can get.

The classic may be the smallest of the SAK's, but the mighty 58mm should not be under rated. How many 58mm fans are out there, and how many of them are classic aficionado's?
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Love the tremendous variety of handle designs for the Classics

1. Ski Resorts.

2 & 3. Fashion 6 series.

4. A very attractive model from Rio de Janero.

These are the only ones I consider to be my "collection"...even though I have dozens of other SAKs.
As of now I wont touch a classic no matter the design on the scales. Rambler's or bigger, or 91's...
But these are what got me into buying up SAK lots in the first place..

I do so love the 58mm range, particularly the classic. I think of it as my long fingernail, usually for opening packages and boxes at work. My most used Classic is a sapphire one I picked up at Target about 8 years ago or so. In addition, I have 2 or 3 red ones, a black one, two silver Alox, and one each translucent red, orange, yellow, purple, and dark blue. Missing a translucent green one to round out that rainbow. Strangely enough, I really like the fine control this size of blade provides, and would likely carry it as my only knife if the handle were longer.

You may want to try a 74mm, just a bit more knife.
An Executive can be had fairly cheap on line. $10 more or less.

Not as many color options as the 54mm line, but I like the one I have. It's black.

I have a black Executive that I carry frequently, actually. My ideal SAK in that size would be only scissors and two small blades.

I'm primarily a 58mm collector... though not strictly classic.  Depending on what you define as classic, I do have a number of them.

Strictly classics (classic and classic SD, both cellidor and alox), I have 57 of them.

Cousins of the classic, in my opinion, are knifes that have the blade, nail file, and scissors, but have other minor differences.  For example: Signature I and Signature II just replace the toothpick with a pen.  The Bijou drops the keyring.  And the Companion is just a smooth alox version of the Alox Classic.  I think you can also make a strong claim that the Broker, Diplomat, Stylus, and Swisslite are all part of the family as well.

If you expand the definition a little to include the close cousins of the classic, then I have 80 of them.

Nice Thread! The knifes from the 58mm family are true EDC!
Here are a few of mine. Not all are classics.

Hi everyone,

I just bought myself this little Victorinox gem, the tiny classic, older model as the nail file still has crisscross pattern, the handle plates turned out to be 14Kt gold with a nice line pattern.

This beauty is as new, complete with small leather slip pouch, the blade never has been sharpened.

I can't find much info, better any info, on it, so I hope that someone on here has some info on it.

Like how much gold is used for making the handle plates? the weight of this little classic is "hefty"  much more weight then a red plastic handled one.

I would like to know when these gold handled ones where made, how many were made, what they originally cost and whatever info someone has about my new favorite classic.

Best Scouting wishes from the Netherlands,

Bagheera

Really a little beauty! Congrats.
But I have never seen these scales, so I have no information.

Hi Bagheera,

Welcome aboard!

Great score on that gold Classic. The only info I have on it comes from a 1970 catalog, where it has the model number of 'U Gold'.

Victorinox did a couple of other gold Classics. The squared-off brushed-finish one was part of the Deluxe Series and has a number of 0.6210.88. I have no info on the diamond-checkered version, other than there's also a 75mm version of it.

Those Japanese designs are a lot more fun than the avalanche of pretty lame Classics that Victorinox churns out each year. Not sure why they think the world needs trillions of different Classic while awesome knives like the Mountaineer are only available in boring old red.... ditto the Rambler.
I see no sense in repeatedly purchasing the same SAK from Victorinox especially if the only difference is the paint job, but I can understand collecting advertising knives like the Japanese ones. They're far more interesting to look at, for a start.
