The problem with the Gerber Cable Cutter head is that the cutters were designed to cut very soft copper cables, so as soon as someone uses them on any kind of steel (doesn't have to be hard) it damages the cutting edge, and they aren't simple to re-contour to restore the cutting edge.

IMO they are really only fit for shelf queen duties ie for looking at as a different and unusual MT (and the buying public agreed, which is why Gerber no longer sells them).  They look impressive with those great big cutter jaws, but weren't so good in actual use.
Thank you! Good information, Greg! :salute:

As easily as it was to remove a minute amount of material from the cutter during the restoration, I can see exactly what yiu mean. And indeed, the head definitely looks impressive, but as you said not practical. If I had one as my only MT with me, I'd be tempted to try cutting harder material.

A lot of the cable cutter probably got sent back to Gerber too, making them even more difficult to find. I feel lucky having gotten one I could bring back to decent collection-condition. :)

I had the very same model camo Pro Scout and the paint so easily chipped off that I was left with a steel one. No biggie - it was a high quality plier and I used the heck out of it. I’m still in awe of how tough these pinchies actually are :hats off:

So true. Gerber painted finishes are really crappy, but the tool is a beast for sure. A lot of people don't know how much abuse a Pinchy can take.  :ahhh

Indeed. The MP600 Basic and Pro Scout are two of the best pliers based tools made. For the money($40-$50), the 600 is about as good of a deal as one can get. It is the only tool I know of that can operate maintenance free for over a year or more.  :ahhh

Carrying the mod I dubbed the MP6000 today.

Non-standard features are knifeless, two tone, integral cutters (which I don't think they sell anymore), wood saw, diamond file, awl, much better can opener (from a Strata), and tweezers. Excellent tool in my opinion, and all it needs to round it off is a traditional folder, for a fully capable combo that you can pretty much carry anywhere. Some of my knifeless mods need a little extra back up (the Fuse and Diesel mods need pairing with something that has a can opener), but a regular slippie is the only companion this needs.

Excellent custom 600, AW! :tu:

They do still make the needle nose in non-replaceable, but not the BN.

I had never considered the Strata combo too, but it makes sense seeing it there. :)

Thanks mate

The Strata can opener is one of the best can openers on any multitool IMHO. It's a thin but strong opener which pierces and cuts easily, and the grinding on the hook part gets hold of the underside of the lip better than most.

The saw on this came from a Strata too, which is slightly slimmer than a regular MP400/MP600 tool. The MP700 tweezers were the perfect thickness to take up the slack, as well as adding the extra function.

Not great condition, but I'm a bit burned out on $100+ Gerbers. For $47, this is good enough for the collection. :)

Finally found a BN FPR Multi-Lock.  :woohoo:

FPR BN Multi-Lock(bottom) pictured with the NN FPR Multi-Lock(middle) and an older Multi-Lock production tool(top).

FPR NN and FPR BN same toolset. Note: The flat drivers are shorter on FPR Multi-Locks. Phillips is different as well(no fingernail catch), but same length.

FPR Multi-Lock(left) and older Multi-Lock BN(right) drivers.

FPR Multi-Lock(bottom) and older Multi-Lock BN(top) drivers.

The Multi-Lock and MP600 seem very consistent in terms of quality and price from 1998-2019, minus the swap to the wharncliffe blade. :ahhh

Hello to all 600's owners. I have just ordered a bladeless model, and it appears to be of the replaceable-cutters type.  I'm somewhat concerned because I use my tools frecuently to cut coat hanger wire (I think it's a kind of hardwire) and occasionally "large-paper-clip-thick" ss wire, and reviews haven't been good to them. So, my question is, have anyone found a good-but-cheap cutters replacements? Thanks in advance.

😁 Here u go.

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,78912.0.html

I had done some trial myself. Generally, I encountered 2 types of cloths hanger. One is a thinner type and another type that's tough as nails. I didn't have a caliper to measure them.. The stock carbide one can cut the thinner ones with no problem but how long it can keep going is another question. The one in the link can cut the thicker ones with no problem. It's a mystery metal, but will not shatter. Didn't dent in my test either. But then again, in my test, I realise the type of handle splay the MP series have is not really ideal for heavy cutter. That amount of splay doesn't allow me to maximise the gripping strength. From what I have handled, the LM core handles heavy cutting best. Comfy handle + perfect handle splay. OG Surge works pretty well too but for the newer ones, the handles opens too wide.

Thanks Sam, for your help and attention! But, as my luck would have it, this is what I get at the site... I'll keep looking since I still have a week and a half before I get it. Maybe I can "transplant" my nonreplaceable pliers head from the BO basic until then ( that smurf thing is bombproof!)!
