As an aside, I am constantly amazed at peoples grasp of english and its idioms and slang. I'm assuming english isn't your fiorst language firiki?

Greek is my mother tongue, the one I function with. I started learning English (and French  :ahhh ) at an early stage like many people here. Good thing I like to read. Having subtitles on the TV and the movies also helps a lot. That's not the case everywhere, it seems. I can't stand dubbed films, I want to hear Japanese, Norwegian, Swahili, you name it!

I think it's only normal for someone not to learn other languages when they can expect to be able to communicate in their own language, in this case English. Personally, I try to decipher anything I come across that's written in some alphabet intelligible by me.

As for slang and idioms and phrasal verbs, these require some effort despite having plenty of on-line resources nowadays. It's all part of the game though, getting to see things from a different perspective. By the way, MT.O is a great way to learn, refresh and expand one's grasp of the English language. A true multi-tool, as I've said before :salute:

Yet another reason to be ashamed by the UK's colonial past.

You're right though, this forum is fantastic in so many ways - diversity of members being one.

:salute: It seems my grasp isn't so firm, after all. There's an entry in Wikipedia on the subject. I didn't realise I was being so rude! Thanks for the heads-up!  :-[

I should have known better. I rarely venture into using slang in other languages. It reminds me of a time when I jokingly said to a French girl that her face had turned red and that she looked like a piglet. She almost slapped me but as she saw my surprise was genuine she said it wasn't my fault. Later, someone explained to me that it had quite a sexual meaning, in  a way. Not my fault because I didn't even say it right but her dirty mind thought otherwise for a moment  >:D :drink:
