ulfberht sword documentary
on: May 16, 2014, 02:53:47 PM
Seen this documentary on youtube, its about the viking ulfberht sword.  They say that these swords contained steel not surpassed until the industrial revolution!  an American blacksmith recreates the sword. Well worth watching

There's been enough Vikings in the past where I live, in fact two of them are still here!  :viking:

:ahhh <---that is me running around excited.

I have seen that one before, but I enjoyed it a second time. Thanks for sharing.  :salute:

So Philby, do you have any swords by chance.  :)

If so...

Unfortunately no swords. My most sword like blade is a First World War British bayonet, Wilkinson Sword.  One day I will get a Viking sword. Liked the Windlass Ulfberht reproduction, sadly now discontinued.

Just watched the movie - pretty cool, but the end left me for more...
Was it to be a safe queen, or did he put an edge on it and gave it some good use?
Oh, and the guy had an awesome beard.  :D

The Viking swords aren't the most comfortable grips on this planet. If you don't hold them correctly, you will pay for it with that pommel striking your wrists in a painful fashion.

Not half as painful as the other end through the skull :viking: Wonder if thats why they wore thick leather wrist bands?

The wrist bands help with support.  Those things get heavy very quickly.

I love watching craftsmen work.  I think its also very interesting that even back then fakes were made.

This is a good reference book on Viking swords http://www.amazon.co.uk/Swords-Viking-Age-Ian-Peirce/dp/1843830892 it shows the different styles found, and where they were found. Some of them are in great shape and could still be used!
