Does any UTA fit any Leatherman?

AFAIK, there are two versions of UTA, the earlier model will only fit a selected few models, while the latest one will fit almost most MT you see nowadays.  But both are discontinued for while, as you probably may have known.   :)
Merit Badges Participants shall carry and use one Soldier knife, the model of their choosing, for the duration of the 90 days and post a picture each day. Participate in a challenge thread and post a photo of a Victorinox 91mm XAVT/XL/XLT, 111mm Workchamp XL, Wenger/Delemont S54/Tool Chest Plus or Wenger Giant for thirty (30) consecutive days Using EDC items randomly selected with a poker hand, post a photo of your EDC or a component of the EDC that got used during the course of the day for 4 weeks (or 30 consecutive days) Start a new thread and post a photo of the 111mm sak for thirty (30) consecutive days. Start a new thread and post a photo of the minimal sak (2 layers or fewer) for thirty (30) consecutive days. Participate and contribute in Challenge thread and post a photo of either an Axe, MT/Folding knife or Fixed blade (picked at the beginning of challenge) for thirty (30) consecutive days. Participate in a Challenge thread and post a photo of a Spyderco knife for thirty (30) consecutive days. Participate and contribute in Challenge thread and post a photo of a different blade each day for thirty (30) consecutive days. Participate  in Challenge thread and post a photo of a SAK Soldier for thirty (30) consecutive days. Participate in a challenge thread and post a photo of a SAK Cybertool (any variant), Swisschamp, Champion or Toolchest for thirty (30) consecutive days. Participate  in Challenge thread and post a photo of a Fieldmaster SAK for thirty (30) consecutive days. Start a new thread and post a photo of the discontinued sak/mt for thirty (30) consecutive days. Start a new thread and post a photo of a fixed blade for thirty (30) consecutive days. Participate  in Challenge thread and post a photo of a Explorer SAK for thirty (30) consecutive days. Start a new thread and post a photo of any gear for thirty (30) consecutive days during the MTo anniversary month. Start a new thread and post a photo of the leatherman (supertool, core, hacks) for thirty (30) consecutive days. Participate  in Challenge thread and post a photo of a Vic Spirit MT for sixty (60) consecutive days.

Any way to tell the two apart? I own a surge, MUT and skeletool. I considered modding it. But I cringe at the thought of modding a discontinued tool.

You want the later one (Universal Tool Adapter or UTA). The early one (standard Tool Adapter) has two dimple/lumps and a lug on the side at right angles to the main body of the adapter, and only fits the older LM MTs with the skinny handles.

The early one is on the left, the later one  (that will fit a Surge) is on the right in the picture in this post:

Below is a good thread about the two with a Standard Tool Adapter modded to work with newer LM like the UTA. Got some good pictures ofthem with several LM tools.

You can still find both versions every now and then on ebay as I got one of each a couple of months ago. I've got a total of 3 Standard Tool Adapters and 1 Universal Tool Adapter.

The UTA/STA can't be used with the Leatherman OHT for obvious reasons.
