While I'm sure it was still a tough decision Cash will be great.  Your vet sounds like he's more than capable and with the love you all have for Cash he'll bounce back with ease.

The great thing about MTo is WE TAKE CARE OF OWN.  This may be a forum and your nearest brother of sister is well across the world we look out for one another.  This is what makes this place so fricken amazing.

All the best to Cash and the family, my little guy and I will be thinking of you all.

Good choice. I'm sure Cash will bounce back quickly because he's with people who care very much about him.

Sorry for your dog! It really makes me sad to hear what happened! :(
I too would advise you to amputate under this condition... If it wasn't already decided ^_^
I really love dogs and my family had a Shepard mix for more than 15 years (we had to put him down because all his limbs hurts and he couldn't held his head up and run into things). With all the shows on TV I watch about dogs (some even starring three legged ones), dogs are good at adapting with a missing limb. There are possibilities of getting protheses for Cash. Although I don't know how much this will cost. But after the amputation you got enough time to save up money I think. The wound needs to heal properly.
I wish you and of course Cash all the luck in the world!

Update*** The vets office called earlier today and bumped our surgery back to Wednesday. He had an out of town emergency, so that is understandable. The bride is going to take him in Wed. morning and according to the vet he should be home no later than Friday.

Good luck MGill. I'll keep your dog in my thoughts.

A few weeks back my 17 year old cat get hit by a car and we unfortunately (after surgery) had to put him down. Poor bugger was too old to handle it :( I hope whoever hit your dog stopped at least. The guy that hit my cat just took off.

Anyway, there are plenty of three legged dogs around. It doesn't seem to worry them at all. Yours will be just fine and back to its happy self in no time I'm sure.

Absolutely!!! The worst part is I live in a cul de sac so the douche bag had to back up and turn around to get out of there. It's not like he could've just kept going.

Also means he most likely had a reason to be around there.  Maybe talk to the neighbors and see if you can get any info.

Same with the cat! He lived with at my parents place (girlfriend is allergic to cats) and they're on a quiet little culdesac too! It's very curved so even 10kph is fast.

It's not like you could hit a dog and not know it :(

Sorry this probably isn't making you feel any better. Hopefully what goes around will come around.

just being 'devils advocate' for a second.
i want to first make this clear (it's too early in the morning for a roasting  ::)) I would stop for any animal I hit, and I'd probably be more upset than the owner. I'd do everything i could to help, it is a shame but some folks don't. BUT~
I once stopped after hitting a cat, the only one I've ever run over in my .....hundred years or so of driving, and nearly got assaulted by an angry owner. If someone hit one of my animals they would probably do best to leave the area till i calmed down even if it wasn't their fault.
some people just aren't that worried about animals/pets and possibly don't think it's a big deal to leave while others just panic. doesn't make it right ! BUT if you were there to help your pet, what good would the driver have been at the scene ? (I'm not sure if car insurance runs to 'animals' ?)

In German law you have to call police every time you hit any animal, otherwise you are being criminal. As a good citizen you not only got a car insurance but a general liability insurance too. Because an animal is in German law a "thing" (sadly), the killing or hurting of a pet is a damage to property. So the insurance will pay probably.

I'm sure, but willing to be 'corrected', that in the UK you only need to 'report' (to the police) if you hit a Dog ? cats don't count
I don't know of anyone who has ever 'claimed' or had a 'claim' on their insurance for a cat or dog. and the way the thieving smurfs operate here (insurance companies) IF you claim for anything your premiums skyrocket so most people would avoid owning up to hitting a 'much loved pet' I would imagine
(I'm not agreeing with it, just saying it as i see it !  British people like to be thought of as 'animal lovers' on the whole, but i doubt many would stop if it was going to cost them)

*on a similar note ~ old story
a friend of mine once hit a 'deer' while in Scotland. the beast jumped a fence and landed on his roof, then ran off ! totally destroyed the car. my buddy reported it to police AND his insurance (bandits) but was told he wasn't covered and would have to trace the animals owner and sue them.

Wow Guys
Great supprt for MGill, Cash and his family.
It seem that we all love our animals as much as our Multitools - and quite right too.

Just my two cents - Great and correct decision IMHO.

Happened to a VG friend of mine a few years ago with their cat.
Amputation ($50 or so) , the injection ($25 dollars), or operation $x,000.

So amputation it was.
The cat was leaping all over the place after only a few days and almost seemed unaffected by his loss physically or in any other way.
And as many have indicated (3-1) is very very diffrent proposition than (2-1) - and animals are incredibly adaptable.

And most importantly a good life and many more happy days and years with the family.

H

Not to take a shot at anyone here who may have suffered an amputation, but I always thought that animals dealt with amputation better because they don't have the option of complaining about it like we do.  :P

I'm glad you guys have made peace with this- at least as much as you can.  It'll be a bad experience for you no matter what, but Cash will be up and around in no time and he'll never worry about it.

Dogs are geared towards having a good time no matter what rather than worrying about any physical issues.  Have a look at this guy:

Please keep us posted on how it goes.  I'd love to hear how he makes out on Wednesday and after.  :D

Dogs don't know there's anything wrong with them.  It's one of their many advantages over us.

Update***    Cash is out of surgery he did great during the operation. Our vet just called my wife and told her that it would be best if she would come pick him up. He said he is in a lot of pain, and he is very needy. When he was left alone in a room he would start crying out loudly. So he thinks he will be more comfortable mentally and physically at home. So she is on her way to pick him up now. She is going to have her hands full with both kids and the dog by herself until I get home from work. But she's a trooper, she can handle it. Thank you all again for your thoughts and prayers. We have still got a long way to go, but we are going to make it.

I am about to leave work in a few minutes to go and check on him. The wife sent me a couple of pictures. She said that he is on some strong pain meds so he is a little drunk and in a ton of pain but his spirits are high. I'll keep everyone posted as he recovers.
