Hardwood scales with inlaid metal shield? 1037

Hardwood scales with inlaid metal shield?
« on: May 24, 2014, 05:46:35 PM »
Am I right in thinking that Victorinox have only produced 91mm hardwood scales with branded and printed shields? Or have they produced any with a real metal shield?

What about third-party manufacturers? I know there is an enamel-look option available, but it isn't quite the same.

I'd love a dark hardwood look with an authentic inlaid shield.

I haven't found any yet with real metal shields, only the enameled metallic logo.

I'm sure someone will turn up soon to help you out.

I like the look of the black buffalo horn with red shield, not bad for $25 delivered, it was going to cost me $30 for a set of nylon scales from the U.S.!

How about rosewood? Dark in color and with shield & cross.

All of the wood-handled damascus models have inlaid metal shields.

Gigahz - that looks awesome, is the shield just stuck to the surface? Not inlaid at all? It's difficult to tell, you did a great job.

Reinier - do you know of rosewood scales that have an inlaid shield?

ColoSwiss - thanks for the tip, that's good news (although expensive)! What is the dark-handled knife in your first picture?

I believe the Rosewood Swisschamp has a shield - at least mine does. The one ColoSwiss posted is a Damascus Climber.

My rosewood SwissChamp does not have the inlaid shield, I haven't dated it exactly but old mag glass, hook, no crimper. The rosewood is just beautiful, I sure wish the shield were inlaid, oh well...  :)

As Reinier mentioned, Damascus Climber, 2011, with ebony handles.

All of my rosewood Vics have painted on shields.

The Damascus Climber is pretty, but I think I'd prefer a slightly lighter wood than ebony. I want to put the scales on my custom EDC (when I make it), and I'd like the wood to take on a vintage patina with use but for the metal shield to shine through. Ebony is just a bit too dark to take on much patina!

Gigahz, did you extract the shield from standard celidor scales? How easy was it?

I wonder if the burned shield is exactly the same size? If so it might be possible to (very carefully) modify one to take the shield inlay?
