Gerber's Customer Service
on: May 26, 2014, 05:15:05 PM
Hey guys, I've got a quick shout out to Gerber's CS. I bought an EAB sometime back, I bought it to use as a garbage blade. You know one of those blades you carry to cut those things that may damage a quality blade. As it turns out this little blade is extremely handy. I love the little bugger, and rarely leave home without it. My only complaint however is the aggravation of swapping blades. I know, I know, it's only one screw. And with the knife's minimalistic design any quick change mechanism would be next to impossible.

The other day I was swapping the blade out and carefully trying to not loose the screw. But our old friend Mr. Murphy showed up and laid down the law. I dropped the screw and absolutely couldn't find it. I was at work so I headed down to the storeroom to find a replacement. I found something that would work but only for a little while. I checked Gerber's website to order a replacement. I just knew that with as little as the screw is and as often as Murphy shows up, they would have them for sale. No such luck, I did a Google search... nothing. I finally decided to give Gerber a shout and see if they would sell me one. The guy I spoke to informed me that they do not sell them but that he would send me some for free, 5 to be exact. They are supposed to be here in a day or so. I know it's a lot of hassle for a cheap knife but I'm not going to let a $.03 screw ruin one of my favourite blades.  I thought that was pretty awesome of them to send them for free and to pay the postage. So I thought I would share this with you guys. I am not a huge fan of Gerber's products in general, but their customer service is top notch.

credit where credit is due  :hatsoff: to Gerber on this one  :tu:

quick story...sorry I'm bored, it's a bankholiday and raining ! which is no surprise ...this is Britain

I too have an old and beaten EAB and it's a great lil' tool, I got it for all the reasons you mention (and cos it was cheep  ::)) also I gifted one to a friend of mine who works in the building industry. He was always borrowing my swisschamp while tormenting me about my *boyscouts knife*. He never goes anywhere without it now  ::) and was deverstated last year when he 'lost' it while pouring a large concrete slab, until it bobbed to the surface while the crete was still wet. That little sucker had gone through a mixer and been pumped about 100mtrs  :sa: he washed it off under a hose and changed the blade, then sent it back to the front line  :multi:

I completely trashed my EAB but I'm glad to hear yours is alive and ticking. Great CS on Gerber's part!

Awesome story!! Mine is on relatively good condition considering the torment I've put it through. It's also saved many hours of resharpening "good" blades. It may be the best knife I've ever bought for less than $20.

I got mine after digging a rawl-plug out of brick wall using the main blade of my swisschamp  about an hour after I'd sharpened it to within an inch of it's life

Love my EAB for those times I don't want to completely kill my main blade.  :tu:  Good on Gerber for taking care of you.  I've yet to need their CS, but from all I've heard, what you experienced is the norm with them.

Lol

I also lost the screw out of my eab.

I called Gerber and they sent me ONE

it came in just a few days

I'm going to give one of there tools a try this summer. Customer service is very important to me. I've been bashing Gerber junk for years but if they stand behind there products they can't be all bad.

As said many times in various threads, Gerber makes some superb products and they also make a lot of complete junk. I would hope they stand behind all of their products equally however...

They do stand behind all of their stuff, still isn't fun trying to dig through Gerber's catalog and guess what's good and what's junk.

The Flik is made in the US and is a piece of absolute garbage.  I say this from (unfortunately) personal experience.

On the other hand, I've used a couple of Chinese-made Gerber knives that have been quite adequate, probably because the OEM they chose knew what they were doing.

Finally back to normal. I agree with the sentiment that most of Gerber's products are garbage. I have only bought one product from them that wasn't a waste of money, and that was the EAB.

that's not very charitable MGill ! specially as they treated you so well  :o
'Garbage' is way to harsh as a generalization IMO
have you ever had an MP400 or 600 ? I wasn't keen till I'd had one for a while, now I'm something of a 'fanboy'
Granted some of Gerbers products miss the mark a little, but none of it is total junk. At least nothing I've played with (yet).
And from what I've seen post Bear Grylls bashing, they seem to have upped their game while others are cutting corners in the name of profit

Hypothetically, had a MP600 been your first experience with Gerber, you'd probably think they were the best MT manufacturer in existence. Gerber's problem is inconsistency, you can't judge them based on just one product :salute:

+1  The first Gerber I ever handled was a Suspension.  I broke it while still in the store at the counter!  I was determined to stay away from them until I got an MP450 in a trade here.  Nowadays a 400 or 600 is the to you'll most likely see me carrying.  There's just no comparison between them and the lower end Gerbers.  An MP is a top of the line tool, and in a business where I deal with contractors all day, I see more 600's than all Leatherman models COMBINED.

I'm not a big fan of Gerber, but I get tired of the parroted comments that all Gerber stuff is junk.

Gerber is on my list of companies that I don't like for going offshore, but the stuff they make here is great stuff. I've got some family that works in the building trades, and they don't own one single Leatherman between them. But the Gerber multitools are holding up for them very well, and they can be bought at a better price point, which is important when you are a blue collar worker on a construction site.

In additon, some of the family carries those little Gerber LST's. These have to be some kind of landmark knife. I say that because I have seen two of my cousins abuse them to the point of stupidity, yet they don't break, and just keep on going.

Yeah, some of Gerber's Chinese stuff and may be less than good, but the U.S.A. made stuff is great. Stop bashing Gerber and try putting an LST in your pocket of a Gator or gatormate on your hip. You may not need another knife for a long time.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.
