Looking At The New Surge.

Some pics for those that may find it interesting.
I bought it from an auction site as used, minus the file and box.
Wear in pics was how it arrived.


This anchor is dated 0813. The older stainless one is 0311.




Still grinding on this side.




Same tearing where folded. Same end caps that move around.




Cutout has been rounded off.




Pinchy gap is bigger.




The handles sit further apart.




Handle and fold for the outside tools are deeper.




Handle end and cutout for tool access has changed.




The 'unique' blade exchanger.




If only I had the flat tip eyeglass screwdriver to pry it open with. Fail.




It gets worst. The added thickness makes it stick out. How much?




Enough to slide the saw blade under.
Looks like there are two washers between the handles and both blades.




And the trademark has been registered.




Things I didn't get a pic of before the camera ran out of battery: different padlock pic on linerlock, metal scissor handle, close up of double washer mentioned above and handle cutout for inside tools lock.

The Bosch 'basic for metal' blade and heatshrink fits the old blade exchanger with much less movement than without the heakshrink in the new blade exchanger. I'll update with how it is to use in the future.

Yes. The BO is new, you can tell by the shape of the cutouts on the handle - they are more curved and less angled, as on the old version.

So somethings got improved, and some downgraded. :-\ You don't seem too thrilled though.

Thanks for the great pics, they really show the difference. :hatsoff:

It appears to me that the scissors got a bit changed too. Different tips (wider) and the grind seems different too. :think:

Yes, thank you for the detailed comparison.  It is good to see these differences brought to light, mitigates future disappointments.  I still want one thouh  :drool:   :facepalm:   :drool:   :facepalm:   ::)

Luckily they fixed the biggest problems like jamming on the flathead or generall play. Mine have no tearing (SS version).

The biggest and most problematic thing I have noticed is the distance between handles when using the pliers. This is shown well in the pictures posted above. I barely have enough grip span to really get a good purchase over the distance between handles WHEN CLOSED. I haven't been back to work yet, so we'll see how this plays out in the shop when I actually have to grab around something with the pliers.

In comparison, my Wave and ST300 allow a much stouter grip across the handles and feel like they are allowing maximum clamping force.

Something to consider if you already feel like the ST300 is too big for your hands.....

I'm trying to show the changes more than my opinion. I'll update with my love and hates once it has had some use. Apart from the ramp there is no change to the scissors that I can see.


New Surge, ST3 w/old Surge plier, Core, Old Surge w/ST3 plier.

More clearance around lock tab.




Optical illusion? The stainless handle looks to be made from a thicker sheet.




The new blade has a nice curved drop point.

hrmm...


it mimics the WAVE more so than anything, I feel like they've finally taken the WAVE's refinement and transferred it over to the Surge.


Now I want at least the BO one for my collection, how much were they running?

The biggest fail of the new Surge, for me, is the lack of a real, long shank, 3D phillips.  Come on, Leatherman!

I wonder if the handle separation distance being bigger on the new Surge is intentional, or if yours simply falls within the normal variation range? The way the handles "stop" against the plier head means that it doesn't take very much variation in any number of components to cause the plier handles to separate farther. (hope that makes sense)

BO Surge was $115 at the LM store when I was there on Saturday. SS version was $100.

Call me small minded, but this is probably the reason why I will buy a new Surge (and why I haven't bought the old one yet), I hate plastic on my multitools, especially the heavy duty ones.

Great comparison pics zoidberg  :salute: i still cant see me getting a new one as my old one is doing well,but if it fails and i need to send it in ill be happy to try the new version, although if the pliers broke i would be happy just to have the new pliers but im guessing they dont fit straight in a old surge  :think:

I understand what you mean. Also the pliers were swapped between the ST3 and old Surge, that could be throwing it out too.


The handle stop is about half a mm forward.

Cheers. They do sorta, its the handles that don't quite close.
Personally, I like the old Surge pliers.
I'm trying to resist putting them (and the long Phillips etc) into the new Surge handles.
