Mil-Tec GAK 108s...any good?
on: June 12, 2014, 01:18:56 AM
Does anyone use a Mil-Tec GAK? Are they any good? Do they hold an edge?
How much wood does a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck chucks wood?

I agree with Enki - the mil-tec ones I've seen are awful. If you're in the UK why not try Endicotts - they sell original GAK's for about a tenner.

I've no connection with Endicotts but the owner Kevin is great to deal with.

I have seen some nicely put togetehr and some horribly wonky Mil-Tec ones. I can´t say anything about the steel quality, but I´d guess it´s rather poor.
The Mil-Tec are Copies of the GAK (They were never been issued).
I would take a used GAk (Vic, Aitor, B&H, Adler, CCM and maybe even ICAR) before I bought a Mil-Tec

I've got one kicking around somewhere and I think it's...OK.  Not as good as a Vic, but nothing wrong with it either, it just suffers in the comparison.

I was looking at the version +pliers some time ago. 50ft-trad sent me one as an extra on a trade we were having at the time to test it out. I was doing the saw test at the time. He told me it was terrible but I never expected it to be that bad.

The 108mm saws are the worst of any SAK but the Mil-Tec one was exceptionally bad. I would have had better results using a butter knife. ::) And once the scale fell off I got a look at the "rivets". They were hand peened and not even well. Very loose with lots of play and one wasn't even peened at all. :faceplam:

I'd stay clear of them and get any other GAK as Thomas suggested. Not worth the aggravation.
