CRKT Minimalist Warncliffe
on: June 12, 2014, 01:57:10 AM
So, I was in Lowes two weekends ago. Other than not being able to find any of the things I needed, it wasn't a wasted trip.

In their display of assorted CRKTs for $20, I found something other than the usual folders. An itty bitty little warncliffe, and I've kinda fallen in love with this profile since I ordered one of their Dragons. So it had to come home with me.

Carrying it for a few days, it's really hard to believe that this blade is 2" long. It's just tiny, looks smaller than it really is. At lease when it is in the sheath- the skinny grip throws off your estimate. In the hand, yeah, it's 20" long and it is shaving sharp. The spine has enough of an angle to throw sparks from a ferro rod and to scrape cedar bark with, so it has potential for being turned into a micro kit with a few other additions. That skinny handle, by the way, is scaled with some kind of Micarta, a really nice hunter green and black. And it's a subhilt for every finger, you aren't going to lose your grip on this, and the center of balance is well behind the cutting edge, so it just moves like water, there is no hesitation. The knife is a 9.5 out of 10, and I'm taking  half a point off because while I like the little braid at the end of what is a three finger grip, I think it's too long but that is a very small looking hole and I'm afraid to try to cut the stock tail off and try to put in one of my own.

The sheath... mixed bag. As always with CRKT. Retains well, no feelings of looseness, and it's fully riveted, no lose screws begging to be replaced or at least lock tighted. Hanging on the chunk of 550 cord they sent, I like to carry neck knives grip upward in concept, but the center of gravity means it flops over to the side. Safe, but uncomfortable. It really wants ride tang down, and that makes sense. There is also a little screw on belt loop or clip, not sure what it is supposed to be. I can't attached it to the sheath through all the layers of kydex, so it wouldn't be a secure belt loop; but as a clip, it's not strong enough for retension. So, if I ever need to anchor this to molle webbing, zip ties or paracord will be involved, not this stupid clip.

For $20, which is half of MSRP BTW, I can find nothing wrong with this.

And now that I've started looking, I'm thinking of getting it's kerambit brother.
