ultra fine stone for serrated edges ?
on: March 12, 2014, 04:12:51 AM
Any one ever seen a ultra fine stone for serrated edges.

I use a spyderco 701 medium / fine ceramic stone set for most of my sharpening needs.

I lost the ultra fine stone I was using for my plane edges.
I'd like one that can be used on both now that I gave up looking and am planning to buy a replacement.

spyderco makes a ultra fine sharpmaker stone but I'd really like something similar to a profile 701 stone http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=95

thanks

Never used one. I just use a lanksy system or freehand on a whetstone.

I use the Sharpmaker system and stones. I have the diamond, medium, fine and extra fine. I tend to use mostly the medium followed by a quick strop on leather. Never found the extra levels of grit worth the time. The edge was just as effective with a quick touch up on the mediums or strop. For serrated our combo blades I prefer the medium finish as it adds to the 'bite' of the serrations in fibrous material. Of course this is all just opinion as I have no empirical testing to back any of it up, just my experiences/observations.

I dont see the need for an ultra fine stone for serrations or for plain edge knives for me.  You should be able to get sharp, very sharp blades not matter if plain or serrated edges with just the fine grit stone.

I get em sharp

I strop my serrated edge with a leather shoe lace.

but to get the edge I want I need something finer before I strop.

Old and picky, huh?  I hear that!  LOL

I guess you will have to pick up one Ultra Fine rod for the sharpmaker then! :)

I have had quite a few sets of the ultra fine but each time I try them, I dont think they do that much to my blades.  Of course I never let mine get dull so usually just the fine ones will bring the edge back very quickly.  If alittle duller, then I will use the medium ones.

It would have been awesome if Spyderco made the ultra fines in the 701 setup.  I would have one even though it probably wouldnt get used as I really like the shape.
