Corrosion Skele vs Skele
on: June 12, 2014, 05:55:54 AM
I been meaning to show this for a long time. There has been some talk about Leathermans and corrosion and how they don’t get along well with salty sea water.

I have one Skeletool witch I use when I go scuba diving and yes I bring it with me down under water. On a typical diving day I do the first dive at noon and then I come back home 6 pm, that meen that the Skeletool have been exposed to salt water for  6 hours.
When I come home I rinse it of with fresh water and spray it with WD40. If I stay in a hotel I only rinse it.
This Skeletool have been on about 15 dive trips.

My other Skeletool have never been in contact with water and have lived its life mostly indoor.

Considering LM's reputation, that's actually not bad at all  :tu:

It's only a bit of surface rust on the plier head, right? Or is there rust I didn't see in other spots?

Yes that’s right, only some small rust on the plier head. The coting on the bits went away after the first day. Now I don’t bring them with me on the dive anymore.

This shows what proper tool maintenance can do.

I've not had much of a problem with rust either because I try take care of my tools.

Once a year, usually Memorial Day weekend, I give my MTs a WD40 bath and brushing.  But that could take a month or so for some of the collections I've seen around here.
