best online leatherman buy?
on: June 14, 2014, 08:42:34 AM
This is a two part question

1: What is the best leatherman tool (in your opinion)?

2: Where is the best place to buy a leatherman online, best price and free shipping?

Cheers :multi:

I'll answer question two first:  If you're in the United States, Amazon.  I haven't found anywhere that offers free shipping at all; their prices are average to good.  With free shipping, Amazon edges ahead.  If anyone comes up with a better answer, I'll be interested too.  I'll note that you can almost always find them cheaper than Leatherman's website.

As for question one, I would be more comfortable answering "which is best" if I had an activity or lifestyle in mind.
My EDC:
Leatherman Skeletool   Led Lenser P3 AFS P
Leatherman Style CS    "Fauxton"
Sharpie Twin Tip           Bic Mini

Well it's not for a specific activity like camping but something to keep in the car or bike for quick fixes and the like.  Would like something a bit better than the basic line. looking to spend about 100 bucks.

Not answering "best leatherman tool" but possibly "best value leatherman tool" and perhaps "best just to keep in the car", but have a look at the Rebar.  A lot of metal for your money.  Target price "50".  That's US$ :tu: or UK£

Rebar is my current outdoors activity carry.

"best bang under 100 bucks" - start with a Micra and add either a Rebar or Wave.  There is always a deal somewhere online.

I have found eBay to have the best prices on LM's. Amazon has been charging close to retail lately.

For keeping in the car, I'd go with a Rebar/Micra combo or SuperTool 300/Micra combo.

I carry the above two combos in my truck so I get to choose depending on what I'd need to do.

There's an online dealer who has been serving the knife community for almost 30 years.

You can purchase both a Leatherman Rebar and a Supertool 300 for $90.00 including shipping.

You're allowed to say who so long as you're not getting any kickbacks from them...

Are you referring to knifecenter.com again?  :pok: ???

No,Knifecenter.com never seems to have the best price unless its a blowout or clearance sale.

1 - the "best" Leatherman is totally subjective; for me, the "best" for EDC is the Rebar.  It has that sweet combination of ease of carry plus good utility.  For some guys is the PS4, and others the Surge.  So it all depends on what floats your boat.

2 - "best" place to buy?  I go with Amazon to start with.  I recently added a BO Rebar to my arsenal which I got for $45 shipped on Amazon.  Ebay is another good option, as long as you stick with sellers who have multiple thousands of sales and >99.7% good feedback.  Just my take on things.

I don't think you can go wrong ordering from Leatherman's full-size range.  If you go for a Rebar or ST300, spring for a Micra as well.  The scissors are worth it.

One thing to keep in mind are odd fasteners.  My Chevrolet has lots of Torx, my Kawasaki has lots of Allens.  The Leatherman Bit Kit is extremely valuable for repairing these vehicles (I replaced the distributor cap and rotor on my S10 with only my Skeletool and Bit Kit).  If you go for a tool that doesn't have a bit driver, I suggest getting the bit adapter kit.

Don't forget a flashlight.  Remember, everywhere on Earth is dark at least half the time, so there's about a 50% chance you'll have to make your repair in the dark.

EDIT:  I would also recommend going with tools that are either in current production or were very recently, mostly for warranty concerns.  Between the original PST and the Rebar, I'd go with the Rebar, because you've got all the warranty left.

For fixing vehicles I'd also suggest you consider a leatherman Crunch.  As well as proper locking pliers it does have a slot for std 1/4" hex bits.

That's what happened with Target, they too stopped selling LM's. I miss them because whenever I shopped there, I would go look at their LM section just to get a dose of them in their clam packages

At one time, they appeared to be a big seller of the LM's so I don't know why they stopped. Perhaps they were unable to make what they felt to be a profit on them. They still carry some Vics but seemingly the same old ones they've had for years. I wonder how long that will continue  :-\

Target did have good sales on LM back in the '90s.  It's no wonder I shop there infrequently.

The best Leatherman is the one you have on you  :tu:.  I have the Surge on me for work and carry a few different ones on off days.  I think the Leatherman Wave is still the best bang for the buck and very competent when the bit kit is added.

I found my Wave plus bit kit and Led Lenser light at Westmarine for $50.  There have been some great deals on fleabay as well so you really need to do some searching.   Check the deals section here on MTo as members have a great knack for sniffing out steals.
