It's still using threaded pivots like Syph's models. I only went for these this time:

Every time I resupply on screws I almost get the 24k gold plated ones.. then I think.. no I dont need them... but maybe I should give them a shot.  They might look nice with black scales.

$30 for 100 of them.

After some fine tuning, the finished product:

any ideas for a name?

I got nothing so far. I guess technically it's not really a Swiss Army "Knife" anymore lol.

I found some screws at a local hardware store that just happened to have bolts and heads that the scales would pop onto. The diameter of the screws were slightly less than the stock pins so some of the snap was gone when closing an opening tools. My 2.2 mm brass pins finally arrived so I removed the screw I had in the corkscrew slot and put in the pin, which solved the problem. I actually think it has a little more snap now than it did stock  :D

That's basically the only thing I did... improve the snap and change the handles. I also scored the T6/T8 bit from Austria, which is perfect for my Spyderco :D

couple questions for you bodie

1) can you provide more info (and pics if possible) of the screws you found?  i'd love to try tracking some down tomorrow

2) where did you get 2.2mm pin stock? i thought that was the holy grail of sizes and we were stuck sanding 2.5 (or 3/32) down?

thank you!

oh and what spyderco model is that?

It's true. A perfect pin stock match is key for a good snap.
I get my 2.2 brass pins from a model company named Modelcraft. They sell 2.2mm. :tu:

I believe I may have a solution to size problem. I may make a special die to cut thicker brass rod down to size. The only thing holding me back is waiting for my friend at the machine shop. But once I get the drawings done, I'll share them here :)
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

1) I ended up krazy gluing the handles on since I didn't think I'd be popping them back off. I found them at a store called Quality Hardware in Thomasville, NC. I'm not even sure what size they are. I just showed them the the scales of a SAK and asked them to help me find the closest thing that would fit. I originally only got them to temporarily put the knife back together to ensure that everything was working properly before putting the pins in. Then I realized that the scales would pop on and decided to just leave them. The side with the bolts was really tight. It took everything I had to mash them on with my fingers. When I put the black ones on I used a vice.

2) I got the 2.2 mm brass pins from rotokid: http://rotokid.sosakonline.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1

I'm probably going to go back to Quality Hardware sometime and see if I can find them again since they worked so well. If I'm able to get more I'll post some pictures and report the size. Best thing was they were only like .22 cent a piece.

Edited to add:

Almost missed that last part. It's a limited run Carbon Fiber Spyderco ParaMilitary 2. My favorite EDC knife. I wish I could get a back up, but the last one I saw on ebay was buy it now for 450 :O when the original MSRP was around 169 I think. I think they run at about $100 or so for the G10 version.

Yea, that one is pretty sweet. That's the one that inspired me to do my first mod, except I put in a serrated blade and left off the scissors. Then after some tinkering I realized I could replace the blade with scissors, which was perfect for me since I'm always carrying my Spyderco anyways  :D

Hi.

I have just finished the rebuilt of my GAK. I called it GAKL "Germany Army Knife Luxory" Only tools are original, the rest is brass and wood palisander. I need to polish it and then it will go to ebay.  Maybe...

(Image removed from quote.)

Well, they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so I must credit the above as the inspiration for the below...

But I decided to do something different for the back side...

The Runes are electro-chemically etched into the brass (well, they are in relief rather than being "into" the surface)
I decided to put them so they were upright when the blade was in use, but with 20/20 hindsight they would have looked better the other way up.  C'est la vie.

The runes are "Lorem Ipsum" text in a Dwarfish_Runes.ttf font I found on the interweb.
I hope by some random chance it isn't a powerful spell to summon the dead or something

Excuse me while I wipe my chin. An excellent example of the gentleman's knife.

I think something like this with copper and something like curly maple, or possibly even presentation blued steel and a good faux ivory.

did you use the "screws" from knifekits?

looks great.

edit are you concerned at all about possible cracking from the wood expanding/contracting from changes in humidity?

in Wisconsin, USA we deal with humid summers and dry winters, although i'm unaware how ebony handles these changes.

No parts from knifekits.

I used standard M 2 Torx screws, fastened with the help of brass tube and screw thread tapped by hand.

Ebony is very resistant to humidity changes by nature. Thats why it has a long history as knife handle material. But additionally I treat it with linseed oil which hardens after a while so that the wood is protected. Under normal circumstances  no problems should arise. Under extreme conditions, I have no experiences. But I can change the handles, the advantage of fastening by screws.

thank you for the response and additional info about ivory.

time will tell.

i guess for extreme conditions having the wooden scales attached in the traditional cellidor hole manner and perhaps some glue would allow the wood more freedom for expanding/contracting.
