couple questions for you bodie

1) can you provide more info (and pics if possible) of the screws you found?  i'd love to try tracking some down tomorrow

2) where did you get 2.2mm pin stock? i thought that was the holy grail of sizes and we were stuck sanding 2.5 (or 3/32) down?

thank you!

oh and what spyderco model is that?

That local store didn't have anymore of the ones I got the first time around :( On my last mod I ended up ordering some 2-56 and 3-48 bolts from newegg and it worked out ok. The side with the nuts actually just press on like normal (with a great deal of force). You can see in the picture below where the inside of the scale took the shape of the bolt. On the other side I had to use krazy glue on the bolt heads to keep the scale on. The snap in the tools is still excellent. Oh, and to give the pin enough room to slide into the scale I had to file down one of the nuts using a dremel.

did you end up cutting the bolts lengthwise to fit??

thank you for the pics and the follow up, i appreciate it.  I'm thinking of heading to a hobby store in town and seeing what they have

excellent work.

anything new up your sleeves?

how my city has changed, drove to two separate hobby stores and both were gone,

the local ace hardware had 2-56 and 3-48 but not even close to long enough.  got the lead on a place that is open mon-fri

ace did have a nice selection of saks that i didn't see until today, they had a pretty diverse selection including explorer, compact, a few 111mm slide locking, and accessories...I picked up a new 91mm pen.

So these are screws with threading over the entire length?
Did you notice any change in the folding behaviour of the tools?

that would be the one issue i'm guessing, where the chicago screws that synth007 uses where would be more appropriate

bodie do you have a caliper and could measure the bolts you used?

I had an idea that you could get a certain length bolt and then zip off head and use a nut on either side and then the scale wouldn't have to be glued on the head side.

I didn't know exactly what the 2 or the 3 meant in terms of diameter in the 2-56 or 3-48 so after some searching i found this equation:

diameter = (number) * 0.013 + 0.060  that gives you the diameter in inches.

so for the 3 it is .099" or 2.5146mm

so for the 2 it is .086" or 2.1844mm

very close to what we need for pin stock diameter.

i'll be checking out a place called fastenal in town here for some bolts of this size to try them out.

thanks again bodie for posting more info.

Ehr, there are screws with a hexnut-head already. You'd just have to counter them with a nut on the other side.

the one store fastenal didn't have much of anything in this regard

but found some 3/4" ones in both sizes at menards.

that size should fit for some of my mod ideas but I'll need some longer ones for another idea

anything new up your sleeves?

No problem. Yea, I put the nuts on and then used a thin pair of wire cutters to cut them as close to the nut as possible. I had to file one down to make it flush. Two of the bolts were only an inch long and barely fit through. It worked out great though because I didn't have to cuts those two. They came out flush all on their own :D This mod turned out so well that's it's become my EDC so nothing new up my sleeves, for now...  >:D

Did you notice any change in the folding behaviour of the tools?

Yes. No change and everything is still snappy so far, but I'll keep an eye out. The only tool that has problems sometimes is the saw blade, but that's because of the limited room it has (I have a saw/combo tool layer). So if it doesn't line up perfectly it won't snap closed because it will catch the liner. I could probably fix it by shaving a little off of the tip of the saw tool, but I don't use it that much so I've just left it as is so far.

that would be the one issue i'm guessing, where the chicago screws that synth007 uses where would be more appropriate

bodie do you have a caliper and could measure the bolts you used?

No caliper :(

I looked forever for chicago screws, but never could find the right diameter :( I would love to get my hands on some of those...

Some folks in a little place called China. There is more info in the custom 3mm pivot thread, which reminds me I should start a new thread now that the pivots have been ordered. Should arrive late next week.

Cheers

Oh right I heard they make a few things in China.

I'm curious to know how your order works out.  What the tolerances are on the pivots etc.  As in variance over a sample of say 20.

Awesome job on the Rambler. I like that you used a rescue blade instead of the normal one.
I was thinking about adding a USB-layer to my Alox Rambler as well. Anything to consider there?

Real purty, it has the look a hard woking sak.  Is it three layer?  Electrician blade fit with the saw?

three layer yes.

i have the saw in place of the big blade, and yes the electrician blade is in that layer.

i did this mod with a file as big blade too:

i like the longer phillips.  I use the phillips alot.

I always have a different blade (mostly utility) on me so SAK blade doesn't see much use.

Please keep us updated on the bolts as pins experiment. It will be interesting to see how they hold up under a bit of torque.

Temp's were in the mid-high 30's C range outside this weekend, so I had plenty of time inside with the A/C on to build a couple of knives.
