I also tried to use replacement springs from 91mm models on my vintage 84mm scissors and had no luck. The cureld up part is too big to fit into the hole and the overall spring is too long preventing the scissors from fully closing. I ended up writing Victorinox and they sent me 3 84mm springs. :D Not sure if these were remaining stock from the old days or springs for Executives. But they're definitely neither 58mm nor 91mm.

Here's a comparison shot:

(Image removed from quote.)

58mm spring, 84(?)mm spring, 91mm spring

I've converted the 91mm springs to 84mm in the past. It's doable, not easy, but doable. I know Neil has some 84mm springs in stock but he isn't around as much anymore. :(

Here's a pic of a 91mm spring in 84mm scissors.

Ya it looks like youd have to grind a bit of the curled part off, then it could be compressed to fit.

That won't do it. You'd have to cut more and then recurl the end.

Ah, those suckers are hard to bend too.

Try heating the end of the spring up red hot with a butane pencil torch and letting it cool naturally, should be at least semi annealed and be easier to bend. then heating again and quenching will harden it again. The only problem is if it is too brittle and needs tempering as well.

A useful trick is to hold the spring in a tub of water with just the part you want to heat up sticking out, then the heat treatment of the rest of it is not effected. I used this trick to soften the tang of some 91mm scissors to drill the pivot hole for 84mm conversion and then re-harden them.
It may be heat treatment at its crudest, but it works well enough for this, but probably too crude for blades.

A Prince in black Micarta

Unfortunately I had to rework the main blade too. Someone from the honing staff at Victorinox had produced a kind of dent in the edge (and this is not the first time I encountered this with factory new knives from Vic). I had to even it out, regrind the blade and set a new bevel. But now it is very sharp, the hairs flying off the arm voluntarily.

Nice mod! The only thing I might have done differently is replace that philips opposite of the mag glass because there is a bit driver already. Then again I'm not sure what I would replace the philips with, maybe get a wenger universal wrench in there somehow.

8 Hours with a jewelry saw. I must of went through 30 blades. I don't have a sander or grinder. I used files and sandpaper. That was too much work.

Making liners is a royal bitch.  Especially since you only see a sliver of them in the finished product.

Yep, and with ones made of 0.025 brass that sliver is barely 1/2 a mm wide.

I used 18GA or 1mm for 3 and 20Ga or .8mm for the other three. Now I want a brass lined Swisschamp. That isn't happening any time soon.

Alright, after some waiting on donor knives I could finally upgrade my keychain Rambler with an USB layer. And since timing allowed it, replaced the silver scales with black ones from Denmark. Close to perfect I'd say. :D

At first, I wanted to use the keyring part of the USB release. However, I carry this SAK on my bulky keychain. After the test assembly I hooked it on and noticed that the weight of my keychain alone was enough to flip the USB lock open. That's why I grinded it off and used the standard spring keychain attachment. Works a lot better now.

Looks awesome.  The red and black are so nice.  I was thinking of doing the same and grinding off that plastic keyring.

@Grumpy:
What you now need is some sanding paper. Don't worry to carve the liners a bit. That's a way to get the perfect fit. ;)

My Special Mechanic now has a victorinox shield inlay, too. My second try was much more accurate. :-)

Is it finished now? Who knows, maybe some bone inlay on the back will follow.
