Thank you all for the info, I have a local hobby shop or two that needs visiting...    I had seen the Apprentice but unfortunately also saw the prices some bring! Figured I'd probably spend twice as much, bugger a couple perfectly serviceable knives, curse a bit, and try to make my own...   

Yea, some of those out of production SAKs get crazy expensive.  I was lucky enough to have someone give me a beat up Apprentice I was able to get back to functional but I'll probably make up some too.  Even though the Apprentice is compact and has a great tool set, the backside phillips has some limitations on strength so I'll likely make up some Scientists.  That's another out of production and crazy priced SAK with a good toolset.  Its like a 91mm Apprentice with an inline phillips and magnifying glass added and corkscrew on the backside instead of the phillips.  I'm not a corkscrew fan nor do I need the small driver it can hold but I haven't seen any non backside tool scales for 91mm or I would drop those altogether.

I should have taken more, but only managed to snatch a bit of time in the evenings to make a start on these.  The process is a bit laborious, but it's nice when they start to really take shape like this.

   It's 9 or 10 liners all stacked up so I can shape them in one go.  TBH it's a bit thick for my belt sander and fret saw to handle - I'd be better off doing them 4 or 5 at a time.

Yep, all manual - except for the belt sander.

The way I do it is:

Cut the blanks using tin snips (21 mm x 100 mm or so) out of 0.8 mm brass sheet.
Flatten the blanks as they get bent during cutting.
Drill and deburr one pivot hole in each blank.
Stack the liners and clamp together with a single factory liner as a drilling template, using a 3mm pin through the already drilled hole as location.
Drill the other two holes in the stack - this ensures that they're all in the same place.
Separate out the stack and deburr the holes as necessary
Rebuild the stack with a factory liner at each end to act as a guide for the sanding - bolt and rivet together tightly.
Hacksaw as much material from the outside as possible.
Use belt sander to get the outer edges close to the liners.
Use a combination of hack and fret saw to remove the material from the middle.
Belt sand the bits in the middle you can get to.
Keep going at the shaping with files until very close to the shape of the factory liners, then switch to aluminium oxide/silicon carbide paper and polish to finish.

You really should.

I'm certainly eager but if this is to happen radical changes must be made in my life first. Like, getting a bench to work on and getting some more tools and a place to put said bench, also finding the time. Baby is the top priority right now though, things are tough I can tell you. Alternatively, if only I could manage to be granted free access to a friend's workplace...

You don't need much to get started with modding, particularly if you're doing cellidor stuff - a drill, some files, punches and a hammer will do to start with.  You could use my tools anytime you like, but I guess it's not that convenient.  Time seems to be my most precious commodity.

For basic modding you really don't need much at all in the way of tools. Time is what you need and parenthood doesn't come with an Hermione Granger 'Time Turner'.

Drop your end of times shenanigans though and you'll have plenty of time for modding.

So far so good. Thank you. During workdays and if there's nothing else to do after work I get to see the lil' one for about an hour before bedtime routine, I give him that so we can spend some more time together. His mum is also working so in the weekends we try to spend as much time together as a family as possible while getting everything else done as well 

In 91mm size, the Huntsman and Handyman models have me covered. Alox is what I'd like to mod.  That's a very kind offer on your behalf, I'm afraid hopping on a plane to the UK every now and then would be a tad inpracticable, though. On the other hand, my friend works at a place equipped with all sorts of tools but he doesn't own the place

Bottom line is I need a clamp vise and a drill first, then get my priorities all set and then just take the leap. Hopefully you all will be hearing about how that went
