Not really a SAK mod... but a simple mod to the mini sd... A friend did this and I wanted to try it myself just out of curiosity... An LM mini/eye glass bit replaced the standard one...

Nice I was thinking for similar mod for some time and yesterday I made this:

https://youtu.be/Sf67Vv5MhHs
That would be cool too... g-10 colored handles looks make it even better... ah ah ah...

Dark stonewashed some PX tools, had the liners black oxide coated, and wrapped it all with some orange scales for an October-themed SAK.

If I never do another 4-layer build, it will be too soon.  Combining two pivots and getting them the right size is such a pain in the neck.

And finally, wrapped some copper scales around a nice dark stonewashed toolset.  I also heat-anodized the stainless screws a nice bronze color.

Tons of thanks to Robert for both coming up with that design and the tons of help he gave me and others to get this same design going on our own knives.  It is such an efficient and effective layout.

This can't really be considered as a mod as it is a quite standard Compact...
But it was made with a used and totally seized up Compact and a dirty Camper.
Part used :
Camper :
  • Blade
  • Aluminium scale/spacer
  • Rivets
  • Spring with split ring ==> I wanted to use it instead of the dedicated spacer but it is not the same width as the blade spring...

Compact :
  • Combo tool
  • Scissors
  • Springs
  • Hook

Another October-themed knife ... this time I used an Electrician instead of the PX.  I love that little Electrician blade but man is it a pain to sharpen.

Red alox bantam from a cadet+cellidor bantam.
Man, drilling out rivets on alox is nerve-wracking.

Looks great, T14.  :like:

Agreed on drilling out Alox rivets, but to me the peening is more tedious.

Yup. I am not experienced enough to get my peening completely consistent between pins. I'll let the pins settle for a couple of weeks of use, and then shape the back pins using a flat milling bit.

Two more mods this weekend. Much more relaxing than alox work
- First a simple 84mm apprentice mod based on a nylon waiter
- Next is a two layer 91mm "cyberapprentice" or somesuch. Based on parts from a DoE and a cybertool34
I hope to be able to transition most of my user knives to nylon scales. Much better cosmetic durability with nylon.

Thanks guys!  Appreciate the love.

T14, on that Cyberapprentice, do you repeen and then reattach the nylon scales?  Those mods look fun to do.

Yup... I basically just take knives apart, mix and match layers, and then reassemble using new pinstock and the standard bushings. Scales are press-fit onto the knife as normal.

But for coloured alox I reckon the screw-and-pivot method is better.

I recently "lost" my daily EDC SAK to TSA (airport security). I forgot I had it attached (in sheath) to my belt, and too late as to be able to return to my car and leave it there. I had a fairly dirty "parts" SAK SwissChamp that I bought to "extract" its magnifying glass/phillips and file layers for some projects I have in mind.

After retrieving these two layers, I used the leftover parts, after cleaning and polishing them a bit, and put together the following 6-layer SAK, where the scaler/ruler took the place of the main (and really beaten) main blade using a brass washer and a broken small blade (as spacer riding along the original lanyard spacer). I used the backspring of the scaler/ruler tool for a spare small blade, which functions and snaps great. I only needed to cut a small notch in the liner to access the nail nick. I do use the ruler on the scaler quite often, so this layout is a great EDC for me, paired with a one-handed knife (Spyderco Para3) for my cutting needs. I am happy! Raul

Indeed!  :o  :like: :like:
It looks like a great mod if you prefer to use dedicated knives over the SAK main blade, and it still gives you the "mini red toolbox" aspect of a SAK.  :like:

No liner between the small blade and saw?

Pablo: No liner between the small blade and saw, other than a slim (0.005") bronze washer needed to even the thickness of the scaler/ruler spring I used. I debated as to keep this modded SAK as bladeless -perhaps making it TSA compliant - but I do not quite trust their judgement with multitools. When flying I always carry those in my checked bags, or not travel with them at all.
