After using the E Blade Farmer I realised I needed the main blade more so the Farmer has been rebuilt as a standard Farmer. Well, not quite. I added a hollow rivet.

Pics from Der Werkstatt last night and out 'n' about this morning:

Hardness of it should give you some info. If you can find an angle where you can try to inflict a small dent. Or if you can remove the scales to find an unseen side maybe? Looks great though!

"Whittling Recruit" - 2xRecruit with a MFV saw between. It's meant to be used for when I whittle away from home, around non-knifey peebles :)

Looks interesting SS - Nice work - Thanks for posting

Can you show us all the tools and summarise the mods please

Looks like you:
- Added a saw layer
- Added a full blade layer - with the main blade converted to a Wharncliffe blade
- Converted the CO SD into a narrow SD - Or is that a chisel (for whittling)
- File work on the back of all tools
- Looks like there is another layer ???

Thanks

PS. Weird seeing snow given we are in the middle of summer - It's been up to 40° recently !!

The base I built on is a recruit. The recruit has two wharncliffe blades and I indeed made wood chisel out of the openers. I removed the fin on the can one ship I got a small plain chisel and a larger (bottle). I wanted to try out sakmodding mostly because of the challenge and partly to offer myself more tools.

I added a MFV wood saw at the center and the another recruit on the other side of it. I turned the small blade into a clip point (ish) and the large one I left in a disaster. I did the same mod to the openers but made them concave to add versatility.

Caveat; nothing is perfectly made. This was my first try at a full mod, once only reshaped blades before and made some wooden scales so this was a new, but fun!, challenge.

I have already dismantled it. I webbed to clean all the parts up, redo some things that I learned from and change in the MFV blade (made into a sheepfoot blade) instead of the failed main-blade.

Next up- how do open this? Placing new nailnicks is hard so I might try (already have) nailnicks continuing across the backside of the blade. I might also try to get tools to thread a screw down into the back (Emerson style? Haha) .

My roomie had to go to bed early so I left things halfway (tried this time to thin the pivots before I cut it up into four small ones)  . This is so much fun!

The bushings that I peen the pivot at, which side of the bushing should be turned outward? It's the wider right? F.... Ah well, will try a third time sometime later ;)

Yes the wider side should look outwards.

Thanks.

The way I built it up is:
1. Opener layer
2. Knife layer
3. Wood saw layer
4. Knife layer
5. Opener layer

So one of the recruits are reversed. This makes the small knife+ keyring thingie reversed too and some other results because of the way I want it in the layer order. The opener layers "has"  to be the furthest out so I can use them the way they are intended (wood chisels) (picture 1)

Knife layers are pretty straight forward. Two wharncliffes, one clip point and one sheepfoot. Blades are currently functional but ugly AF. (picture 2)

Wood saw layer is probably the only one I have not screwed up yet (picture three)

Last but worst is that the clue that the toothpick/pincer is on opposite side of the keyring (picture 4) which means I pretty much assembled everything wrong HAHA!

I'm having a very good time with this, albeit very humbling. I wrong into the project with a clear idea what I wanted, clear expectations of success and a 100% "Jesus take the wheel" attitude and my ad hoc way of doing things. Some times things work out, some times they don't and you learn something instead.

Ok! Forth time's the charm! We don't talk about the third.

Got it all together now, sorted out nailnicks and started evening out the rough areas.

When you turned the bottle opener into a chisel, did you use a grinder or just a stone and/or sandpaper? And what angle?

I've been thinking about doing something similar with a spare Camper.

And does it keep an edge? I tried getting an edge on the inside of the of the opener, like on the older models, but couldn't seem to get it any sharp. Might just be me though.

I used a Mora diamond sharpener. It didn't really take much time and while, due to the steel , you have to go over the edges when you whittle every now and then, the chisels really surprised me at how well they work!

The second set of openers on the other side of the layers are curved (concave) to give me more options. The canopener tool turned out to be too narrow to make concave so it it more V-shaped atm which is good for making lines.

I'm reassembling it all together tomorrow againto see if I can get a 5 layer 84mm to work. So far I've done rookie mistakes but learned each time so hopefully this v4.5 will be ending nicely. If not I might reconsider the wood saw layer to keep it more compact.

Speaking of compact ! I got impressed by someone's compact with wood saw earlier so I might do that as I will have a spare saw.

Back again about sharpening- uttering a Tormek t4 would be best but not needed. Victorinox steel is rather easy to reshape.

I see, guess I'll try to invest a little more time then and see if that solves it.

My latest creation:

Yeah, OK, it's a Climber and the only thing out of the ordinary is the ground-off keyring loop. But I made it from leftovers because a) I don't have a three layer SAK with scissors and 2) I haven't built a SAK for at least a year.  Good to be back at it. :D
