I figured, but how do you sharpen the round edge of the can opener, the edges of a wenger scissors or a woodsaw? I'd imagine that is an extreme pain in the a**.
Patience and time is something you should always have when doing any build ;)

I call this the Woodchipper. My favorite set of survival tools for bush crafting in the wilderness. Two handy blade shapes, the inline awl/reamer, wood saw, wood/metal file and metal saw, and a beer opener. Perfection.

This was a relatively straightforward build, except for the file layer, as the pivot hole in the file needed to be enlarged to fit a 93mm alox knife. I’ve read that many use a carbide drill bit for the hole, but I went a different way. I had a set of cheap Pittsburg diamond files that I bought at Harbor Freight many years ago. One round needle file from this set just happened to have a maximum outer diameter exactly the same size as a 93mm pivot hole.

So all that was required was about 15 or 20 minutes of filing out the hole, until the file could slide right through. Then all I had to do was assemble, using an old 93mm wood saw spring. Easy peasy. I installed the file in the opposite direction of the wood saw, to give the closed knife some symmetry of shape, leaving a nice rear facing nail nick that was thankfully fully exposed. Since the file is next to the main blade layer, ease of opening is identical to that of a SwissChamp.

The file set: https://www.harborfreight.com/needle-file-set-10-piece-69876.html

I think the diamond needle file really opens up some good possibilities to easily adapt 91mm tools to 93mm knives.

Almost a 58mm Vagabond
Reply #6004 on: April 22, 2023, 03:39:26 PM
Almost a vagabond, with minichamp for comparison.  Made from bits I had left over from other mods.

I adapted a pen blade into a hook and changed the layout to put the two thick tools in the middle.  I needed an extra liner but my OCD needed more symmetry

After a bit of reorganising, the nail nicks are all accessable.

11mm thick, so <1mm thicker than a rambler, but I have no scale slots

My latest Sportsman build with homemade linen micarta. The center liner is 1mm brass and the micarta have 0,15mm brass liners inside. All brass rivets and the original shield is re-used.

The original linen fabrik was red just like an original celidor, but it took to the epoxy in a wierd way

I kind of like the look even if it´s not as expected. I call it Dexters weekender...

In my »Everything in it« bag in my car I found a knife, that I modifyed cca 10 years (or maybe more) ago and I completely forgot about it. It was in leather bag I saw a lot of times, but I thought there was something else in it.
Knife has six knife blades. One of them is modifyed big blade which is reshaped and thinned.
Knife is meant primary for woodworking. Why two equal big blades? One is for rough work, the other is always razor sharp. This became a standard for all knives I modifye.
Now, when I know I have it, I will use it more often 😊

Greetings, Samek

Well, it is a knife, and knives have blades, so why not multiple :dunno: just like tools? Glad you found it!

Great builds.  BarbaBaba thats a terrific name you gave our build.  The homemade micarta is awesome.

I wouldn't mind a tutorial if you are inclined to do so, please.

From a happy amateur :)
1. I got some casting epoxy and a linnen fabric.
2. I folded some baking paper in a 10/15cm box and took a piece of wood that i cut just slightly under 10/15cm to fit in the box as a lid.
3. I then cut the linnen fabric in a long stripe in 15x70cm
4. I soaked the linnen fabric in the epoxi and put it in the box, folding it at the edges over and over from the 10 cm side until it was 7 layers.
5. Folded the paper over like a little package and put the wood lid on. Then i put pressure on the lid with two clamps. It was cured in 12h but I waited 24h before cutting and sanding it.

I have only done home made micarta two times before, once with my old Nudie Jeans, and once with Jute (burlap). This time i did not think the red fabric would be so dark (like when wet) but thought it would be like the original colour once the clear epoxy cured. Not so much ;) The Jeans was more true in colour and on the burlap I coloured the epoxy instead. I  suspect that I did not soak the linnen fabrik evenly enough before folding it and putting it under pressure (making the darker spots)... Learning  something new every time :)
It´s quite easy to make and don´t need vacuum to be solid. One thing to think about when sanding it is that epoxy will soften under heat, so take it slow if you are using a belt sander.

Been a while since I did a decent mod. Tonight I put a 84 mm “MT Companion” together. Got the idea from Fit to survive mod for Texas tool crib. I opted for a more conventional 3 layer. The cool part is the surprising snap you get using the standard 84 mm opener spring. Only had to add a few 0.9 mm washers and the blades went in perfect. Anyway check out the YouTube link if you want to see the spring action.

Amazing builds in this thread lately, Barbababa that is some beautiful micarta. PA_strunk, that thing is 👍, couldn’t ask for a better snap on the pruner layer.

My “Devolution 14”. Those scales and shape were just a little too evolved for me. I may end up thinning these out to match the height of the bushings, have not decided.

That’s a real looker! :0)

This is my first in a while too. Essentially a Ranger but with the two main blades form the budding knife plus a 3d Philips on the back with the corkscrew. I’m liking’ it and will call it the Rancher - mainly as I’ve been binge watching Yellowstone!!

Thanks Enginears. I think there is something there for a good cross section of  ‘cutty’ scenarios. Easy mod too as those blades just drop straight into 91mm. I did put a collar in the pivot hole to reduce that down to a more snug fit on the 2.5mm pins and the only other thing is you need to notch out the brass spacer on the main blade layer to accommodate the hawksbill’s tip.

Good to know its not so bad, I have a couple 100mm I plan to break apart for mods one of these days.

Very cool toolset. The metal file is one of my favourite tools and having one in an alox frame would be great.

Ok, I have buying a lot of Ali express lately. Sometimes you get ripped off, but I have to admit I am all about these prefab titanium 2 and 3 layer sets they sell. Basically, this mod is now a modular Spydernox (K390 blade on this one) with 93 mm bottle opener. Think all of you guys should try these out.

Wow! That looks great as is. Maybe it gets some dirt in the bushings' holes, but it's quite unique.

This is my first attempt at making custom scales for a SAK.

I had a small piece of 0.090" 2024-T3 aluminium left over from another project, so I decided to try my hand at making some scales for my 84mm cellidor Bantam.

The scales were machined and drilled on a CNC. I used 3/32" 360 brass dowel pins which were sanded down to fit the 2.25mm holes on the implements.

At first I tried not using the original liners to make the final product thinner, but it ended up being too tight. I figured that the embossing on each side of the liners has something to do with that. I must read all the wonderful guides found here to better understand :)

I decided to keep all the scuffs and nicks on the raw aluminium as I find it makes the knife look well worn and used, even though the original Bantam was only a week out of it's original box!

You can also see my first attempts at trying to mark the blade with a CO2 laser using Laser Bond 100 marking material. For some reason, it would not bond correctly on the Victorinox steel, even though I was very successful on other stainless steels, work in progress.

Another modded SAK made for my everyday carry. I combined the Victorinox Compact and added the inline Philips from the Explorer to create the Yeoman. Swapped out the main blade for the Spyderco Grasshopper. Tools were acid-etched and stonewashed. Brass liners were handmade, then forced patina and stonewashed around the edges.

I like that! I agree that the scuffs and nicks look good. As you use it the wear will make it even better.

The contrast between tools, liners and scales is very nice. How much did this end up weighing? Good work.
