Lovely work! Are those the olive micarta scales from Taschenmesser?

They are black Taschenmesser scales that I repurposed off one of my old mods. My favorite scales.

93mm Recruit anyone! Had some spare parts so decided to try this and the small blade from a 91mm sits very well in the 93 frame. Makes a nice little user. Needs a .3mm spacer to take up the slack around the thinner small blade but that’s all.

That's not a Recruit anymore (nor a Cadet). I think it's a Private, now...

And I guess you need to make the hole in the 91mm penblade bigger, 2,5-3mm? But a cool mod :)

Yes, you are correct of course, forgot to mention that step :0) I use a tungsten carbide bit and it goes through like butter.

91mm small blade also goes into an 84 mm frame easily too. Just need to take a small amount off the front edge of the tang to make its sit down a bit further.

Curios, what's that sitting at the bottom?

Ah, that was just a little experiment. As I only had a scale with a cutout for a backtool I thought that filling the section with a bit of circuit board might look cool. As it turns out it probably
would have if I had some proper ‘crystal clear’ epoxy to set it in!

It does not look bad! I did a similar experiment on this 84mm mutant, pretty rough, more of a stand in until I buy some proper scales.   [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Ah, I see.  I like it!

I thought you had incorporated a pedometer in there or some other digital device.  That contrasting blue is pretty neat.  I never considered this.  I've been wanting to mod some SAKs but all these cool ideas have my head spinning.

I better start small with a scale swap, LOL!

Good place to start….but as soon as you take the old scales off you’ll be wanting to drill out the pins that are exposed…just sayin’

Usable for a quick snip on the beard, label, or tag, but kind of limited compared to a normal scissor. If you hold it like this its not too bad at all.    [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Shout out to FX on youtube https://m.youtube.com/@decoyboat for posting about this mod a while back. I have been carrying the PioneerX - the openers and wanted to make a 91mm version that had a file, scale tools etc.
I ordered some Tachenmesser scales so they may be going on here, not sure yet.

Thanks mag, I have been using an E-blade and a gardener sheepsfoot so much lately it has me convinced it is more useful that the spear pointed so I took the opportunity to re-profile a damaged older blade I had. The finish is my first attempt at metal washing, I’ll probably try to do it with copper next time.

Finally decided to give a mod a go I've wanted to do for some time, an 84mm with 91mm scissors.

I wanted an urban pocket carry for the things I might need that aren't in easy reach wherever I am.  I don't need a heavy duty pry tool.  Nor do I need a bottle opener or a can opener (I have these in the kitchen where I am likely to be if I need one).  I do need a small 2-3mm flat blade, scissors, file.  I also really wanted a smaller philips than standard. Didn't want the keyring.  Originally the plan was to use the 58mm combo tool but went with the backside philips in the end and filed down the size to closer to a 0/1.

Of course I've never modified a Victorinox before and haven't really got the tools for the job.  No bench press drill for example and no dremel either - although I do have a cheap n' cheerful dremel clone - which broke half way through this mod 🤣

Not wanting to let ignorance, lack of knowledge, talent or tools get in the way of getting something done, I obtained an 84mm Sportsman and liberated a set of OK scissors from an old 91mm Climber.   Also managed to source some 2.2mm brass rod.

Dismantling went OK.  Managed to avoid damaging the brass bushings.   Drilling out bushings by hand can be done relatively successfully.  I didn't manage to take many photos during as I did it in my spare time and wasn't sure I'd want a photo record of failure!

I found some guides of others who had done something similar (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=42774.0) so thanks to them.  I did end up having to sort out some issues that cropped up along the way and may do further adjustments later.  I opted to increase the main blade end to fit 2.5mm brass rod (2.2mm on 84mm as std) rather as this was easier in my case, lacking a drill press.

It's not even close to being nicely finished, but it will do, mainly because it's actually going to be used. The last tool mod is to convert the hook into a small precision flat blade screwdriver (~2mm).  Will likely get some easy to remove scales at some point to make it easier to replace the scissor spring if necessary.  For me best advice I can give anyone wanting to attempt anything similar is plan it out, don't rush and do plenty of offering up as you go (test fit, adjust, re-test etc etc).  And it's probably worth getting a drill press and bench grinder plus dremel (don't forget the goggles!) if doing more complicated work.  If I did it again I would probably drill the scissors first and then adjust the spring to fit.

I kept the scissor spring as close to the end as possible and cut a small piece away from the spacer, this way if the spring breaks it can be replaced simply by removing the scales without dismantling the whole thing.  However the scissors do close with perhaps just a smidge too much snap so might need to adjust that at some point.

Overall I'm happy with it.  It disappears in the pocket in a way that even the 91mm Compact doesn't.

Next up is a Yeoman mod.  Probably should have started with that 😁🤣

Full list of alterations:

2 layer 84mm with 91mm scissors
Small file adapted to 3mm flat blade (instead of the nail cleaning end)
Removed keyring
Micarta 84mm plus scales (Taschenmesser)
Reduced Philips to fit smaller size screws.
Cutout on liner to allow scissor spring access if needed

Still to do:

Mod hook into precision flat driver (cut out in external liner for access ready).

Great mods, fellas.  From carrying SAKs for a long time now, I always felt like something in the 84/85 mm range offered the optimum balance for ease of carry and maximum utility.  Many members feel like there should be a full-sized pair of scissors in that package.  Congrats on some nice work gents.  (Qubit:  Some nice work there.  A few tools would make your next efforts much easier, I think.  Your first mod looks great.)  Best wishes.  G
