I don't know anything about all the 'xAK's, but that is Mauser is very interesting.

Is there anywhere I can learn more about all these non-Swiss Army Vic and Wenger knives?

The Mauser is still a Vic product :)

Is the Mauser a regular Swiss Army knife model or is it like a GAK?

Well the Mauser hasn't been made by Vic for a long time, but there still making other 108mm's, the Safari Hunter being the closest match I think

They don't make any of the 108s anymore except possibly the 108 Solo.

They're still around though.

I believe they've all been retired, including the Solo.

I'm still confused. Is the Mauser a SAK, GAK, or something else?  ???

gak stands for German Army Knife, and i bet any issued german army knife can be called like that....and now the sak fanatics join to regroup and charge me for heresy.

Even I think you are going too far there...  ;)

I think the idea is that a xAK refers to any other country's army knife that was made by a SAK company (Vic or Wenger). But you know this..  :P

But still, I am pretty sure I have seen GAK used to refer to non-Vic/Wenger German Army knives a few times somewhere on SOSAK...

GAK usually refers to either the 108mm 2 layer olive drab handled knife (has the saw with opener at the end) or the 111mm version.

There were many makers of the GAK so its in no way exclusive to Vic or Wenger.     And I guess Tarro is right, any knife issued to the German Army can be called a GAK (just to make it uber confusing)

I just want "CAK" to mean "Canadian Army Knife" instead of Chinese knock offs. :twak:

Does the Chinese Army even have any SAK-like knives? If they do and they're made in China, I don't think the west has much to worry about...  :P

I have also seen a Vic GAK Centurion type knife similar to the DAK Centurion knives, i.e. without the OH feature but with GAK scales (not knock off)

Weird, not seen a new GAK that wasn't OH.  I wonder why they'd issue the two styles

The non-OH 108mm GAKs are older.

Haven't seen any non-OH 111mm GAKs,  but maybe those were a transition stage?

Oh thought they brought them back again recently ???, oh well I'm probably wrong :D
As far as I know, the Solo and Solo Plus' were made using what 108mm parts that were left in Vic's bins. It's really shame the 108s were D/Ced,I think they're more pocket friendly than the 111mm line.

The 7mm difference between a 91mm and 84mm is noticeable by most people. It takes a true connoisseur to notice 3mm though...  ;)

That I am,sir :D Another thing in the 108's favor is it's hollow rivet equivalent, no protruding lanyard attachments.

I find using the combo tool on the GAK awkward, and somewhat dangerous (even with saw cover in place), and the reduced saw length is not that great.

Sawing with such a short saw can be hot work, so they want to make sure you have an opener handy in case you need to take a break and have a cold one
