Need a SAK IDed
on: June 17, 2008, 04:26:06 AM
I just got this today. Im still pretty new to SAKs so not up on my model names. I have found a couple models that are close. But not exact.  Closest thing I have found is a Craftsman model. But this one doesnt have a hook.

I think it is a pre-1991 Craftsman. The hook wasn't introduced until 1991 according to the gurus at SOSAK.

Sorry about that. I wasn't aware of the origin of that information.

No matter what the field of interest, there always seems to be one character like that out there...

Sorry to be a pain but I need another IDed :D.   This SAK thing is all you guys fault anyway.   After looking at the SAK selector(Which is great) Im guessing this in an older climber.  The no hook and split corkscrew tell me its older. Im slowly learning :)   This knife does'nt have the key ring on it.  Was that common on older models?

Close but I think it is a Traveller, a close relative of the Climber which doesn't have a key ring.

I am not an expert though. You should definitely join SOSAK, that's where the experts are. There was just a discussion there about Climber variants the other day.

It's already too late, my friend. Your already researching this stuff way past the level of casual interest. I can tell when someone's got the bug...   >:D  :D

Honestly though, as long as you stay focused on just getting knives that are truly useful to you, you won't buy very many at all. I've only got 3 SAKs and they cost me a total of about $40 shipped. There a few models I'd still like to get, but they are mostly cheap as well and I am in no hurry. I'll just keep a close eye out for deals and pick up 2 or 3 a year.

This is especially true if you are primarily interested in simpler SAKs like Waiters, Climbers, and Tinkers. They can be had for under $10, and are not much more brand new. Check out these prices at FelineVet's, where you should always buy first if you can.

I am the same way with multitools actually. I like to learn all about them, but only so that I can make a very informed decision to purchase the ones I will actually use. If I know that I have bought the thing that serves me best, I am not tempted to buy something that I know from research will do a worse job.

As well, reading people's reviews and opinions, you almost get to own many objects vicariously so that you don't want to buy them. There are many tools which I don't want any more because other people's reviews and pictures have fully satisfied my curiousity.

Plus I am just plain poor...  :P

I can't see how anyone can get addicted to SAK's. After all it is just a knife isn't it?

Hang on a minute I just have  got to check an 84mm Climber on e-bay, and I probably won't even buy it.

I am definitely not addicted. I have just a rather large edc rotation. LOL

A few littering my desk.

Two Salesmen, short Climber, Golfer, two short Tinkers and a five layer thingy I cant remember the name of. All 84mm.  I also have another short Climber in a bag of bits that I am going to mod hopefully into a Salesman with a nail-file.

Neil I have almost finished collecting my 84mm now. I have an 84mm Fieldmaster on the way and there is not many gaps. I have no interest in the bale models. As for anything else Que Sera, Sera.

Best regards

Bob

So what models are you still hunting for?   I don't think I've got anything you're missing but if I see any I'll happily provide links :)

I used to avoid bidding on auctions I saw SOSAK members had already bid on but with eBay scrambling names I can't do that any more.  So is life :D

Neil I don't know what I am missing until I see it come up for auction. There is not many coming up in 84mm now I do not have. Thanks for your kind offer however.

It is difficult these days on ebay, I honestly do not have a clue who I am bidding against. When I see the item, I decide my max and set my snipe. I never increase the amount, but sometimes I will withdraw it. In the past I seem to remember you beating me for an old silver alox ribbed knife, which has been marvelously resuscitated by someone recently. LOL

Keep the knife Neil, you won it fair and square. Rest easy I have no more snipes!

I was only being greedy as I already have a Voyageur. I look forward to your restoration photos.

Sorry to Hi-jack this thread.

Micky I like the size for edc. I also like the Wenger 85's but I am not a great fan of their scissors. The Salesman (basically an 84mm SUPER Tinker) is my favourite configuration in that size.

But I collect other sizes too and alox, 84mm was just my latest thing. I think I just like cleaning up the old models and bringing an old stiff gunked up model back to life. Hearing the"snap' of a well oiled SAK.

Three generations of Scottish engineering in my background has to come out somehow!
