Not an expert in any way or shape, but here are a few pointers:opening and closing the tools in a warm bath with dish detergent does wondersrubbing the liners with toothpaste is a nice touchif not, oiling should fix it.. put a droplet on the hinges than shake it all around AKA open and close each tool a lotI replaced Toothpick-less scales before.. it's a bit harder and you need to use a thinner blade (I like my Watch Case opener). After the bath in warm water it should be softer and less brittleFor oiling I just use Vic's oil. It's nice and good and food-safe. I used it copiously for about 20 saks so far and the bottle is only half-way gonePS: Rust on a sak? Are you sure it's a proper Swiss knife? Never saw one with rust on, regardless of the abuse. (except for a test one which was kept in an open bag, in the ocean for a few weeks.)
Here's the before and after pics
