The active ingredient in Coke in this use is phosphoric acid. Which is used as a rust converter.
Rather than just remove the rust it changes it to another chemical compound that prevents more rust.
So your LM will actually be less likely to rust in future.

I always thought it was the carbonic-acid, but it could indeed be the phosporic-acid - the sticks only measure the ph-value and don´t show what caused it. (English wiki describes the ingredients somehow different than the german wiki, too. Maybe different mixtures?)

But as the effect from cola was not enough, i use now either the household citric-acid or the phosporic-acid for rust-treatment fom the car parts shop.
Have fun.

Bye,
Michael

My curiosity has me wondering the effect this would have on a black oxide tool since black oxide is just controlled rust.

Maybe it would help to use something like a old toothbrush to scrub with the coke in the harder to hit areas!  :)

Hrmm... I'll do some research and see if I can find any information on it.

If I can't find anything, I might be willing to try it on my Rebar. It's not like it will render the tool useless, and it'll be in the name of SCIENCE!  :D

Yup BO is Fe3O4 (magnetite) and regular old rust is Fe2O3, so they are both iron oxides.

Nothing fancy to report, apparently a Coca-Cola bath is common for removing black oxide rust that forms on golf clubs. I assume it would be left with a regular satin-ish stainless steel finish.

It would be interesting to see how the Diet Dew works. Do you have any rusty tools that need a cleaning?

Might not be worth it to do on a BO Rebar then.

Agreed. If it left some weird dingy patina look, I'd go for it but if I wanted a plain stainless Rebar, I'd have bought one.

But our curiosity is piqued now. Surely someone has a BO tool that they don't mind trying this on. Anyone? Bueller...?

Obvisiously it works.  :tu:

My parts for restoration are much more rusty, often. There i need much stronger stuff.
Have fun.

Cap'n, does it still have a factory edge? Has it been used much if any?

Yes the edge appears to be factory. The edge shows some very small nicks in it, but nothing serious at all. It appears to possibly be very lightly used (maybe). The tools show little to no use.

Looks like Coke is doing the trick!
I have a Fuse in need for this treatment.
I keep it in my car and it shows little bits of rust on tools, especially on screwdrivers...
