4th of July Fireworks.
on: July 05, 2014, 06:24:59 AM
Today, I decided to do a first for me, and that is to see the American Fireworks with a camera. Now, the Canadian fireworks in Sault Ste Marie is downright pitiful. It was bad the last time I saw them, which was back in 2001. I hear they have gone down hill from there. Yeah, so I haven't bothered to see the fireworks in quite some time. The American ones are always better. Even so, I am not much of a firework kind of guy, thus I haven't bothered to see them since the mid 90s.

Tonight, I enjoyed myself wonderfully. I think I will have to do this more often in the future. I was told to get there early to get a good parking spot. I got there at around 7:30 pm. I played with my camera settings thinking I should set things up before I couldn't see anymore. I also got a bit bored and took a few shots.

I looked up and saw this airplane streaking across the sky. I thought it was somewhat interesting...and took the shot.

Here is a shot of the Ste Mary's River, along with a Sault Michigan tour boat. On the right, off picture, is the Canadian Locks.

So I killed an hour or so talking to an interesting character who was fishing. You just never know who you will bump into. Of interest, was a decrepit looking bicycle that he made himself. This thing looked like it was put together with twin, spit, and bubblegum. I was curious enough to ask him about his ride. He explained that this was design #4 in his attempt to make a bicycle that he could drive and also use as an ultralight. One look at this guy, and you wouldn't be far wrong in thinking he was homeless. You just can't judge a book by its cover.

Anyways, by 8:30, people began to arrive in droves.

By 9:30, the lighting started to disappear.

The show started around 10:15 pm.

As for camera settings:

1. Set camera to BULB. Bulb allows you to press the shutter and release it at your own timing.
2. Set camera to infinity focus...autofocus cameras need to be set to manual focus.
3. Set ISO to 200 or more. Higher sensitivity usually equals higher noise. Every camera differs in noise characteristic. I set my camera to ISO 200. Sensitivity will also determine how long you will press and hold the shutter in bulb mode. At ISO 200, most of my photos range from 2 to 5 seconds.
4. Set f-Stop of 16 for greater depth of field.
5. Experiment with your camera settings.

Hope that helps.

Wow! Good pictures! I don't think I'm owning a camera that's capable of this :-/
