I want a big SAK
on: July 08, 2014, 07:27:08 PM
Ok I want a Swiss champ or a Wenger Tool Chest. Normally I'm a Vic guy but I like the wrench and pliers on the Wenger but I like the scissors awl and can opener on the Vic.

I would like to here pro's and cons to each before I make up my mined.

Thanks

Jeep the SAK of the auto world or is it SAK the Jeep of the Knife world?

I don't like the compass in the Wenger. It just seems to take up so much room.

If you really want to go big or go home AND you want something that can be reasonably be carried, go for SwissChamp XLT.  The XAVT is just so huge.  I think it would be great on a desktop or in a pack, but in a pocket? Dang...

My 2¢

Gods.. wrong thread.. soz...

Well.. since I already posted here by mistake.. get a Swisschamp. Or a CT 41. The XLT sounds nice too, but I never saw one and I'd imagine it's a brick...

Do you mean the Tool Chest or Toll Chest Plus? If the former, that's a good choice. The later adds the compass which is rather poor and takes up a lot of space. Only problem is the Tool Chest (also known as the Car Driver Pro) is long discontinued and hard to find.

Personally, although I like Wenger, I find that in the two Fat SAKs (I have a Tool Chest without the compas and a couple of Swiss Champs) I find that the Vic feels better to use, it's the opposite effect of the 3 or 4 layer knives being more pocketable in the 85mm size rather than the 91mm. The extra few mm in length offset the huge width and make it feel less brickish in the hand.

Ditto.  The Tool Chest Plus adds a lot of bulk with little gain.

Oh dear, I'm agreeing with Kirky.  I have both the Tool Chest Plus and the Swisschamp.  I'll take the Vic every day for a user. :tu:  I actually took a few pics of them side by side, but had to run out of the house for a bit.  I'll post them when I get back to my computer.

I wanted to like the swisschamp XLT. I bought one, but that one layer really flared up my OCD so much I couldn't take it anymore and sold it.

Its the pruner / electrician blade layer.  The blades have pivot holes larger than the pin stock and I can feel them move in and out when full opened.  I could have pretended that was ok, but the tool on the backside of that layer was a total fudge and doesn't close all the way or sit properly compared to has it fits on a normal swiss champ.  Unless I got a dud, but from pics on line they all appeared to be that way.

I know Im overly picky but it bugged me.  I think the big SAK I want to hunt down next to try will be a workchamp XL.  That one will fill my craving I think for a big Vic.  :D

I wouldn't call it being picky. I too expect my SAKs and MTs to be perfect. If something isn't right, it's just not enjoyable.

On the Wenger side, I think the S557 is the sweet spot unless you're a cyclist.  The the Large Mountain Bike is the ticket.  Excellent chain breaker!

You probably have some idea by now, but for reference sake, I too do suggest Swisschamp.

I owe most of the mentioned big SAK, and personally, I think swisschamp is the only large size 91mm that I will use on a consistent basis, still comfortable to use on hand and carry by sheath.

If the Swisschamp is the one you're leaning towards, don't forget to consider the Cybertool 41 as they've very nearly the same. I've stuck out the only different tools (I can't speak for the back as my Swisschamp is 20 years old and doesn't have a hook).

You just have to ask yourself the hard question... how much would you miss the fish scaler?
