standard sized SAK tools on 58mm frame
on: July 09, 2014, 02:09:19 AM
Some of the modders here have put some standard sized 91/93mm SAK implements on 58mm frames.

Would it be possible to get a list of implements with which this is possible, with or without minor/major modding.

The thinking behind it is a minichamp which punches well above its weight.

So far Ive only done the awl, BUT, Im working on putting a standard SAK small blade.  I was also challenged to fit a 91mm combo tool on there, so we'll see if I can make that work.  I dont think Ive seen a 58mm that could open a can.

Any of the tools from the backside of a 91 would be easist for sure.  The awl or chisel for example.  The rest need pretty heavy re-working, but building a 58 with tools it shouldnt have, its kind of fun to think of.

Wonder who that was. :P

I reworked that so many times.  ANd I do have them fitting now, BUT, some tools that open arent useable... so its not quite ready for prime time.

Excellent.

The small blade was what I was most interested in, because when you have that and the awl, you are already onto a winner, and then anything else on top of that is extra.

Some tools of the 58mm would do, without needing replacement, e.g. the scissors, nail file/screwdriver, philips combo tool.

The trick would be keeping it slim enough to be a keyring tool still, i.e. limiting what you decide to put on.

The thought of the pliers on there is very interesting.

Edit: a thought; given the width of the 58mm frame seems similar to the 91/93mm frames, could the large blade be made shorter and put on there? So it would need to have its front half (with the tip) snapped off, and end reprofiled, but would it be possible given the space/liner, etc.?

Yep I think if re-profiled to a sheepsfoot style that could work.  It would be a nice sturdy blade.

So what is the current list of tools:

Small tools (from 58mm SAKs):
  • scissors
  • philips combo tool
  • nail file / screwdriver

Large tools (from 91/93mm SAKs):
  • small knife
  • modified large knife
  • awl
  • combo tool
  • can opener

Anything I've missed?

Say a small blade and a combo tool opposite eachother... need a custom spring but it would be super cool if it worked.

That would be life changing. Wish I had sweet skills.

Personally I would rather suffer with my fingernail than use a combo tool. To me, specifically the bottle opener tool is truly necessary at the core of what represents a SAK in my mind. When i think of a SAK i think of that bottle opener.

The combo tool is dull for opening cans, looks like a poorly redesigned bottle opener, is at an angle making regular screws difficult, and is just ever so slightly too wide to fit normal phillips screws properly. But hey, you still won, you shaved yourself that whole 1.5mm combining the openers and losing your backup blade.

So, finalized version of my $.02: if you're gonna add a combo tool to a 58mm SAK, do yourself a favor and add the bottle opener tool instead, but keep the 58mm phillips combo tool there too.

Also, not that you're any more likely to use it than when it's on a 91mm, but the hook should fit the 58mm body as easily as the awl - 90% sure it wouldn't poke past the end. Perhaps it could see some use filed down to a lockpick or something wild like that.
