Best SwissTool for Camping?
on: June 20, 2008, 05:59:54 PM
Well, I am going camping in late July. So, I have decided I am going to take a SwissTool along with a Mora, SAKs, Cold Steel machete and an axe.. Which model ( RS, STD.) do you think would be best for camping? I have already ruled the X out because I like a serrated blade.. Thanks

The Standard would be best, as a file could well prove useful for field repairs :)

Mending rucksack frame's, de-burring equipment, it might even be usefull if you damage you cooker :), certainly to my mind it's ''potentially'' more useful than scissors.

Yeah, and you can cut metal.. I think that's more important than being able to cut string and bandages with scissors!

Scissors tasks can be accomplished with a knife blade - perhaps not conveniently, but a knife blade should be able to complete the task.

File tasks can usually only be accomplished with a file - no other implement on a multi is suitable for cutting and shaping metal.

Pack frames and tent poles are usually aluminum - actually fairly easy to cut, shape, and smooth with a multi's file.

Yeah, and the file works SO well when you strike it on a magnesium fire starter! I believe Def pointed this out.. Thanks Def!  :)

I bought a Swisstool X and a Spirit S for hiking/camping and i rarely need to reach into my bag for the full size X, i couldn't do without the plain blade on the S but the serated blade is useful for cutting rope - i never really have use for scissors while im hiking but if i do i have some on my SAK anyway.

I think the std Swisstool is the best all round model . I only carry the RS because of the curved belt cutter for rescue/first aid although I find the scissors very handy BUT that can be taken care of by EDCing a SAK ( Climber ) along side .I like to have two blades on my multitool .

So, you are like me- you would love it if they put the rescue blade on the Standard? Oh, I find that a Standard SwissTool and a Micra work well together!
