SAK/s and ONLY Sak/?
on: July 28, 2014, 11:55:51 PM
I don't think I am out of line to say that in so far as folders go, we could all get by with SAKs.
The Hunter Pro is pretty close to the current genre of a big, OHO, locking 'tacti-kewl' type of knife.
Sure, you're only going to get one steel, and no such things as frame-locks, Axis/ARC/BBL or the like...
...but in the realm of folders, isn't there truly one or more for most every need?

Other than kitchen knives, have they done anything in fixed-blades? Combat, camping, or bushcraft type products? I would think this could be a natural extention for them.

I believe they did bayonets many years ago. However, moving into the already competative market place awash with exotic steel and a myriad of designs might not be the smartest move for a company that have carved themselves a little niche and proved themselves to be superior to anyone who decides to have a pop. I think there's more scope for them in "pocket tools" personally, and I was really surprised they had a go at the Hunter Pro.

They did make kirpans a decade ago. Do those count?
And there are a couple of hunting knives (4.2176 for example) but those may have been made by Muela.
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

At various times both Victorinox and Wenger made bayonets and dress daggers. Wenger also at one time offered a hunting knife, but I don't know if it was actually made by them or by some other company.

At one time Victorinox sold a number of pocket knives with the Sikh symbol them. They also sold two kirpans, which I believe were actually made by Muella of Spain. The knives were only sold in India.

Victorinox also offers a half-dozen hunting knives. As with the kirpans, I believe they're actually made by Muella. See the 2008 Vic catalog in the wiki (page 18) for all of them. I've never handled one; believe one of the members here had one and was not impressed by it.

9 times out of ten I could rely on a SAK to cover my knife needs.

I will still need an occasional fillet knife or my mora clipper when camping.  For chopping I use an axe

I also dont usually like to use a SAK for cleaning game but it has had to suffice on occasions I wasnt carrying anything else.

Heidi-shop carries three of the hunting (scout) knives. They list two of them as being made by Muela (suspect all three are).

Honestly, a SAK is all I ever need in a folder.  I own and sometimes carry others, but I never go anywhere without a SAK.  If I need something bigger and locking, I get out a Ranger or 111mm (my Ranger 53 is my go-to for bigger jobs).

If I need a fixed blade, I reach for my Mora 2000 or Mora Bushcraft Forest.
Yes that's true, but I've been out to sea a long time.

I really only need to carry a SAK, but I like to have a folder and MT on me too.  If I could only carry one thing, it would be a SAK...  Probably. :D

Derek, I agree with you. What I could've done a better job of describing is this. Vic pretty much has all of our EDC needs covered....with the possible exception of (current) fixed blades. SAKS, multi-tools, 'big-folder', gent's knives, kitchen knives, etc.
