Today i got my 03 wave from Grathr  :salute: ,ive been a wave owner since being given one back in 98,at that point this was lm's flagship model,well as opening the 03 version i noticed it had more of a snap when opened in plier mode  :D im sure this has come up many times on mto but something i never realized,it has a tab inside riveted on so has more snap,i then noticed the ribbs like the 04 waves se blade so you know what blade it is,then i noticed its got smooth caps on the end of the handles instead of the older rough ones(prefer the look of the older ones) the only thing i knew was different was leatherman tool on the newer pliers instead of leatherman usa on older model,you can see some of this changes on the newer wave,just wanted to share  :tu: and again big thanks to Grathr  :salute:

Thanks for sharing Zed :tu:  Mine is dated 0802 I believe (don't have it on me to verify), and I'm pretty sure it has the riveted tabs.  It does have a bit of snap when I close the handles, which I like.  I don't know about the caps.  I'll have to check it out later if I think to.  Mine also has the ribbed section on the serrated blade, but I just assumed that was normal.

 :tu: not sure what date tabs and ribs was added  :think: possibly the same time they changed to leatherman tools on the pliers,im assuming the tabs added a bit of weight  :D looks like they used the same older frames but added the tabs,pliers look different on the inside too,

I've also got a newer and older old style wave, I think the tab on the newer ones acts like a spring, there's a similar device on the rebar. My newer one with the tab doesn't have the rattle of the older one, they're both in unused condition. The photo shows the groves on the plier head legs on the newer one, the forked tab or spring fits into these grooves, gripping the plier head. You can just see the forked end poking out.

I'm guessing the purpose of these tabs is to prevent the blades from opening when the pliers are open?

I really don't care for these tabs...

On the new wave post 2004, there is a small tab on the forked spring, that is pushed out when the pliers are open, so that the blades are locked in. On the newer old wave, there is no small tab, the forked spring is there purely to grip the plier head, to firm up the tool. You can still open the blades on the newer old wave with spring, while the pliers are open. The older old wave feels to me like a P.S.T with a few extra tools and outside opening blades. The introduction of the springs looks to be the start of the evolution that leads to the 'improved' much chunkier solid new wave. Although as a lover of the older style leatherman Tools, I prefer the older style old Wave, and for some strange reason (Hollywood brainwashing perhaps?) I like having U.S.A on my Letherman Tools!

Yeah my 03 wave feels a bit more solid closed than my 99 wave,I also prefers the older model to the new wave just feels slimmer and more compact, :tu:

Great, so basically what you're telling me is that I do not have an "Original" Wave, but rather an Original Wave Version 3.0...which means I still have yet to obtain an Original Wave :ahhh  It never ends :facepalm:

looks like mine is the first Original ORIGINAL Wave.   date code 0300/0300

but mine has something special.

Mine should enable the possessor to avoid major modding SNAFUs and minimize the time required for modding SAKs and MTs.

you see I have the Mjolnir of OG Waves!



it was the great Syph007 of Asgard who deemed me worthy to posses it!
it is bestowed with with the very life-blood that Syph007 uses on every mod.
Many mods have been handled by Syph007 of Asgard (or Canada, whatever) but this one was used and carried by the demigod.

So yours is dated 98( first yeat of manufactorer)no tab or ribs,so = original wave

I can't take credit for the list as found it on the net but seems correct :tu:

Just to be safe, get one from each year, and the 20th anniversary one, and a user and a spare user. So 98-04, you need at least 6+1+2=9, may as well round it up to 10!

 :rofl: i started doing this with 111mm gaks but got bored and they all pretty much looked the same,but i could be tempted with a new wave if not just for comparison  :D ive never had old and new at the same time  :facepalm:

Just noticed another difference, my 99 wave has no arrow pointing to the hard wire notch but the 03 has  :tu:

Given the differences of the 3, I prefer my '98 Wave. I'm so glad to have an original in MINT condition  :D
